GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. In the Legislative Council on Wednesday afternoon, the Speaker announced that His Excellency would be pleased to receive the Address in Reply at 3 o’clock. Several orders of the day appearing on the day’s Order Paper, were discharged, and the sitting was then suspended to enable the Speaker to wait on His Excellency. The Council resumed at 3.10 p.m., when the Speaker announced that His Excellency had been pleased to receive the Address in Reply, On the motion of the Hon. Mr Oliver, the Council then adjourned until Friday, at 2.30 p,.tn. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. In the House of Representatives on Thursday, Mr Shrimski moved the second reading of the Pensions Bill. The Hon. Major Atkinson objected to the transaction of any business, and moved the adjournment of the debate, which was carried. The Hon. Major Atkinson then moved that the House go into Committee of Supply. Mr O’Callaghan moved as an amendment— 1 That this House, while willing to grant Her Majesty Supplies for a reasonable period, desires to place on record its disapproval of the course ad op fed by Ministers ip recommending His Excellency to grant a dissolution without offering the Opposition a chance of forming a Ministry having the confidence of the House, inasmuch as Parliament has thereby been prevented from passing measures which it is desirable ihould be passed betore a general election, aud also the expense of a double ssesion being unnecessarily incurred.’ Mr Macandrew seconded the amendment, He urged them to waste no time bat go to th« tote at once.

Messrs' Seddon, Wakefield, Joyce, McDonald, Fish, Harris, Shrimski, Mom goniery and Petrie spoke for the amendment, and Messrs Monro, Moss, Sutton. Mackenzie, Richardson and the Hon. Hajor Atkinson for the motion. On being put to the vote, 37 voted for going into Committee of Supply and 37 against it. Jlr Wakefield declined to vote either way ; Mr Postlethwaite voted with the Government,

The Speaker gave In’s vote with the Ayes, with the view of getting the matter relegated to the country as soon as possible. The House then went into Committee of Supply, and the Ron. Major Atkinson at once moved to report progress, which was carried, and the House rose at 12.30.
