GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held yesterday. Present— Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), A. Sherratt, W. Balfour, R. Mackay and W. Paterson,

A telegram was read from the Government asking for information as to advertising the poll that had been taken on the question of obtaining a subsidy under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act for the re-construction of the Opihi bridge—The Secretary stated that he had forwarded the required information. A letter was read from the Clerk to tbs Temuka Road Board, stating that the Board had granted £350 towards the foot and sheep bridge over the Rangitata on understanding that the Geraldine Road Board also voted a sum towards it. The Clerk to the Geraldine Road Board wrote for definite information regarding the bridge, and were referred to the Ashburton County Council for information.

Mr W. J. Black, the successful tenderer for the Opihi Bridge Protective Work* wrote giving hi# reasons for declining to take up the contract, and requesting that his deposit of £2 might be returned. The Council declined to entertain the request. It was stated that Mr Spurway, the next lowest tenderer, bad taken up the contract. Mr Black’s reason for not taking up the work waa because he was disappointed in not gettingthe contract for the re-construction of the Opihi Bridge alsoMr Wynn-Williams wrote, in reply to a letter from the Council, promising to aid the Council in obtaining a loan from the Government for irrigation purposes. A slaughterhouse license was granted to Mr George Osborne, subject to the Road Board’s approval. In reference to the collection of the dog tax in the county, it was, after a discussion, resolved, on the motion of Mr Sherralt, seconded by Mr McKay * That all registrars of clogs ho advised that for nil convictions they nny obtain against persons keeping unregistered dogs, the whole of the fee, via., 10s, will be allowed until further notice.’
