TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The first meeting of the new-con-stituted Town Board was held on V& ednesday afternoon last in the Oddfellows' Hall. Commissioners present —Messrs Gray (Chairman), Quinn, Blyth, Mason and Brown, CHAIRMAN Mr Qainn had much pleasure in proposing Mr K. F. Gray as Chairman of the Beard. He felt that they ell had every confidtnee in Mr Gray and that he would b«' a good man for the position, and he felt that at the next election the ratepayers of Temnka would be well satisfied with the way in which he had carried out the duties. Mr Blyth seconded the which was carried by acclamation,

In taking the chair, Mr Gray sai&fhe felt very much obliged to them for this mark of their confidence in bim. He would do his utmost to further the objects they had in A T iew, and he depended upon them to cordially help him, and he fait that his duties would be light. They had a good deal to do, and he trusted that what they did would be on a firm basis, and what they did they would hare no occasion to alter. He again thanked them for the mark of confidence they had shown towards him. MIWTJTES. At the request of the Board, Mr Bolton consented to take the minutes of the meeting. THS TOWN BOARDS ACT. The Chairman said that he thought it would be best for them to read portions of the Town Boards Act, and then as business came «p they could take it. This was agraod to and the clauses of the Act were then taken seriatim. OFFICERS OF THB BOARD. The Chairman said that it would be best to invite offers for the appointment of a Clerk and Treasurer combined. Mr Quinn said he would go farther than that. He would suggest that he should take the combined duties of clerk, treasurer and valuator. Mr Brown said the difficulty was to define tbe duties.

Mr Qninn suggested that they should form a committee who should determine the duties to be performed, and thej could again meet in a couple of days. It weuld be better to think the matter over.

Mr Blyth thought it would be better to settle the matter at once. He thought that their officer could also undertake the duties of inspector of nuisances.

Mr Quinn thought that the Road Board would be glad to let their inspector also act for the Town Board if they would pay a fair share of his salary. Mr Mason agreed that delay was necessary to the appointment as they might leave something out. Still it was necessary that the duties should be defined before offers were invited. The Chairman was of opinion that a list of the duties would not tpke a very long time to make out. He would suggest that a resolution should be proposed dealing with the matter. After a consideration of the probab]? re-venue of t)ie Board, it was proposed by Mr Blyth, seconded by Mr Quinn, aiid, after some more discussion, carried for a properly qualified person to act as clerk (to do all clerical work in accordance with the Act) and overseer, collector of rates and dog taxes, inspector of nuisances, and treasurer, at a salary of £6O per annum. Applications to be sent in not later than Wednesday, the ]3th June, at 4 p.m." It was resolved to advertise in the Leader and the Timaru Heiald. Mr Brown was of opinion that one person could easily undertake all the duties, besides doing other work, as the district was very small, ! The Chairman thought that as they were always about they could pretty well act as their own overseer. BYE-LAWS. Mr Brown asked if they had got copies of the bye-lawsof any ether Town Board. The Chairman said that he might mention that he had written to the Chairman of the Woolston Town Board for » copy of their bye laws, but he had not as yet received an answer. He thought it would be as well, also, looking at future possibilities, to get copies of the bye-laws of one or two small boroughs, such, for instance, as Kaiapoi. Mr Quinn said the less they had to do with bye-laws ths better. Mr Mason said they must have byelaws, and Mr Blyth said if they had no bye laws they might as well have remained under the Board, OFFICE. The question of obtaining a suitnble office for the use of the Board w«ss dsfrrred till next meeting,

Mr Quinn suggested that. the Road Board should he waited on hy a depntation—they would have to send a deputation to the Hoard about their share of the Board's funds, etc.—and he had no doubt but, thf\t they would grant them the use of a room at the back of the Board room, TREASURER, Mr Quinn said it would bo necessary for them to appoint a treasurer and get some license forms before next ThursThe Chairman was appointed Treasurer, and was instructed to get forms of license from Mr Stubbs. NEXT MEETING. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Blytb—" That the next meeting of the Board be held on Wednesday next, the 18th, at 7 p.m." LAMPS . Mr Quinn brought undei C.,c notice of the Board the questUi i.f lamps, and suggested that in addition to the two lamps now in the town they should erect four others. The matter was deferred.
