THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE MASTERS OF THE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS.

PROPOSED HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY IN GERALDINE.

<TO THS EDITOR. Sir, —Are not the Board of Education acting in a very inconsistent manner ? They are dispensing with the servicea of the masters of our two District High Schools on account of their not being prepared to graduate at once. On the other hand, in ad?ertiaing for an Inspector, they say nothing about tie necessity for his being a graduate. Surely what is necessary for the schoolmaster is necessary for the one who superintends his 'work. Now, sir, I do not orerlook that the advertisement says that the Inspector appointed will be required to examine in classics and mathematics, but then no one contends that Messrs Wood and Ward are not capable of imparting instruction in those subjects. I)r Foster, at the Board meeting urged that an academical status is the guarant-e of the teacher's fitness ; is it nnt also of the Inspector's fitneis?—lam, etc., ~ Sauce for thi GUhdib."

TO T¥B IDITOB. Sir,—lt has often itruck me during my residence in Geraldine that no steps hare been taken towards establishing a Floral and Horticultural Society, as there is little doubt but that the same oould be carried out to a successful issue. In my peregrinations I often see ■mall sections of land, on which houses are erected, lying waste, without a flower, shrub or tree to adorn them. To the owners of such properties I would say, "Would it not improve the value of your land, besides giving you healthful occupation, were you to have the soil tilled,, and in due season hare your reward in observing all around you blooming with fragrant flowers ?" It would give a great stimulus in this direction were a Society such as I have named brought into existence. I do "trust that my suggestion will be carried into effect, and that for this purpose a meeting of all persons interested will be called at an early date. The season of the year has now arrived when the Society could be fairly launched, resulting in at least one floral and horticultural show in the summer. I now, for the present, leave the matter before your readers,—l am, etc., A Lover op Nature.
