A DISGRACEFUL CONSPIRACY.
At the Manchester City Police Court, on 26th January, a Russian Jew, who a;ave the name of Alfred Abram Saul Stamwi, was brought up uoder the Vagrant Act, charged with having, together with other persons unknown, with a supposed immoral and fraudulent intent, conspired against a Miss Brown, a governess, residing in London. The lady in question had inserted an advertisement in the London papers for a situation as governess. She received a letter from the prisoner in the following terms, and only signed Alfred Abram, instead of his full name : —'Miss, —Would you kindly state on what subject you are proticient to teach, and your experience and connection; if suitable you may have a good chance of going to Australia. Would you object to state what ooleur your hair is, and of what build you are 1 An early reply is expected.' Detective Inspector Camiunda said the prisoner resided off Nelson street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, where he lodged in u room which he used as a bedroom and sitting-room. That morning he Yisited. the prisoner and showed him the letter whioh witness had received from the Chief
Constable, with instructions to make inquiries about it. The prisoner at first denied, but ultimately admitted, havmg written the letter. Witness then smcl to him, 'lf you wish this lady to go to Australia, what position are you yourself in that you can guarantee a situation in the colonies V He replied, ' Oh, I am a Freemason, and a member of the Mark Lodge ; that is enough for you.' Whilst witness was in the room another reply was received, as follows :—' Mr Signotia is an Italian, of Florence, and Spanish acquired in Madrid ; aged 25. Able to sing and play the piano.' In order, to allow the police time to make further inquiries, the prisoner was remanded.
