ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC.
Norman MoKenzie, from Ohinemutu, has been arrested in Auckland, for an indecent assault on a child named Margaret Burley. He had been drinking and knocking down his money. At the Wanganui Police Court on Saturday, four natives were charged with obstructing the police in the execution of their duty. The police were arresting -. Wiki Kemp, daughter of Major Kemp, for drunkenness, when the latter with about 200 other natives, came up, and after a equabble, assaulted the police in charge. The Court fined one Maori £5 and another f. 3, and Major Kamp and h's daughter were each fined 40s. The fllagistrate told the Maoris, who mustered in large numbers at the Court, that the police must be protected. On Saturday afternoon smoke was observed coming from underneath the side of the South Public School, Invercarjill, and after nome trouble, a quantity of rubbish, which had apparently been piled together and ignited, was pulled out before the wood work had caught. In cen - dUrism is suspected. A yonng child, while playing near a well, at Palmereton North, during its mother's abcence, fell into the well, which was 30 feet deep, but the felt petticoat the child wore acted as a buoy and kept him afloat until he was rescued. Daniel Onrill, a fireman on beard the Kawatiri, now at Wellington, fell off the gangway last Saturday night, and was drowned. Tne deceased was drunk at the time, is was also bis companion. The latter, therefore, was unable to render any assistance. A Maori named Wirihanga has been committed for trial at Auckland for rape on a native girl at HeJeDaville.
