Major Atkinson addressed a crowded meeting at Wellington on Tuesday night. His speech was mainly a repetition of what he had said at Christchurch and Dunedin. A vote of thanks to him was unanimously carried. Mr Montgomery, M.H.R. for Akaroa, addressed a crowded meeting on Monday night at Christchurch. His speech was largely a recapitulation of that given by him at Akaroa, He quoted Hansard to prove his former statement that Sir Julius Yogel had said that millions of the first loan had to be expended to purchase support from Members of the House. He denied that Otago aud Canterbury had had their fair shaie of expenditure. He expressed himself in favor of a local government for each island, with a federal government sitting at Wellington. A motion to the effect that he was worthy of the confidence and respect of the electors of the colony, was passed almost unaniuimoualy. A motion declining to express confidence in him as a leader, till the electors had heard Sir George Grey, was negatived by a considerable majerity. Sir George Maurice O’Rorke has received the resignation of Mr Allan McDonald, M.H.R. for the East Coast. It bad been posted in Auckland, but there was nothing to show in whose hands the resignation had been since Mr McDonald had left town. A telegram from Gisborne states that it is proposed to ask Sir J. Ycgel to contest the seat for the East Coast. Mr Rees will be a candidate for the vacant seat. A telegram from Marton states that Sir William Fox has positively refused to stand for that district at next election, as he intends going Home for the benefit of Lady Fox's health.
