London, April 22

A very severe shock of earthquake was experienced this morning over the Eeastern counties of England. The shake lasted fully thirty seconds, and caused considered alarm. Great damage has been done to the buildings in several towns, and at Colchester, in Essex, the spire of the church has been overthrown and £IO,OOO worth of damage done. Several villages ‘were completely wrecked, and numerous casualties are reported to have occurred. Boyle, Midwinter and Alexander arrived to-day, and the re?t of the Aus Indian cricketers will arrive on Monday next. The team will again take up their quarters at Tavistock Hotel, Covent Garden. In addition to the matches already arranged, one has now been fixed to take place at Liverpool towards the end of June. Sir H. B. Loch, the new Governor of Victoria, leaves for Australia by the Orient steamer John Elder. The Pall Mall Gazette says that the undecided policy of the English Government with regard to affairs in Egypt will result in a war with France. April 23. Sroythe, and the attack upon Barlow Smythe and Lady Henrietta Monck, near Killucan, V estmeath, on April 2nd, 1882, con eluded to-day, when the five men were sentenced to ten years’ penal servitude. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received the following cablegram from London, dated 22nd April : “ lonic arrived all well at Rio de Janeiro on 20th, and sriled for London on the 21st instant. Fenstanfon arrived at Madeira on the 22nd instant, and was reported in time for wool on board to be included in May sales.” AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, April 24. At a sitting of the Trades Congress here to-day a ynte of protest against the deportation of French convicts to the Pacific was carried by acclamation.J Sydney, April 24. Dr Barry was enthroned this morning at the Anglican Cathedral with great ceremony. The edifice was densely crowded in all parts. Amongst those present were the Governor of las—mania, Commodore Erskine, and Lady Loft us, with a large number of the elite of the city. Eleven Bishops from the Provinces and from other Colonies, and a number of clergymen assisted at the ceremony. The service was most impressive throughout, the musical portions being specially well rendered, Adelaide, April 24. The South Australian official agricultural statistics will shortly be published. The total yield of wheat is nmv known to have been below the estimate, and it is stated that the average per acre will not exceed eight hn-hels.
