ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.
At the Wellington MagistrateVCourt, on Wednesday, T. J. Glen, publican, and Fred Lanrant, waiter, were charged with having made false declarations under the Registration of Electors Ac in respect to claims to have tiieir names inserted on the Thorndon roll. The Bench inflicted fines of 20a and 5s respectively Chong Ton Tie, who was some time ago confined at Lawrence gaol'(Otago), as a lunatic, bound himself fund and foot, and then set fire to his lint. His charred remains were subsequently found. A saddler named Clias. King, at Gisborne, after a drinking bout, swab lowed a let of chlorodyne, but a stomach pump a ived him Margaret Nixon, a barmaid at Auckland, attempted suicide by drowning at the wharf on Wednesday night, hut was rescued by two sailors. The following sentences were passed at the Supreme Court, Christchurch, on Wednesday :—David Howard Moncrieff Ogilvy, forgery, thrie years’ penal servitude ; Cornelius Fuchs Corrigan, forgery, three years ; Alexander McMillan, forgery, four years; Frank D. Sayle, horse stealing, twelve months’ imprisonment. James Ross, for stealing from a dwelling, got two ye .rs’ imprisonment; William Soppett, for forgery and uttering, four years’ penal servitude. Cecil Gurney, accused of fiandulent conversion as a bailee, was acquitted. At the Police Court, Dunedin, on Thursday, John Donaldson, a miner of Lawrence, was charged, on ttie information of Rubina Donaldson, with disobeying an order of the Court adjudging him to contribu e towards the support of h*r illegitimate child. It appeared that the defendant seduced the complainant (his cousin) and then married her sister. His Worship characterised the defendant’s conduct as scandalous, and nentenced him to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. In the case of Margaret Weir, at Dunedin on Thursday, Mr DennLtoun, for the defendant, admitted the accused was mother ot the child, and had left it where it was found, hut denied that there had been any abandonment. After the evidence was given, MrCarew stated theic was no proof of abandonment under such circumstances as to endanger the child’s life or to permanently injure it, and therefore he dismissed the infunnvtion.
