The latest despatches to hand from Cuba report that a severe engagement has taken place between the rebels and the Royal troops. Tbe latter were victorious, and killed 36 insurgents. Tbe Duke of Buccleugh is seriously ill. No hope is entertained of His Grace's recovery. The Merchant Shipping and Underwriters' Association report, under date London, April 12th, the arrival of the barque Ganymede, from Timaru. Bishop Linton has declined to receive a present from his Norwich friends, preferring that they should give their assistance to creating a fund for the support of his diocese,

Mr Gladstone is suffering from a renewed cold. Her Majesty the Queen proceeds to Darmstadt to-morrow.
April 15
The customary Easter Volunteer Review was held yesterday at Portsmouth and Dover, when 40,000 men were under arms. The manoeuvres were very successful, and tfere witnessed by large numbers of spectators. Late telegrams from Cuba state that the insurrection has collapsed, and that the insurgents are being rapidly dispersed by the Royal troops, who have not met with any further opposition, Pauh, April 14.
The statue of the late Leon Gambetta, which has been erected at Cakors, the place of his birth, was unveiled to-day by M. Ferry. A large number of prominent politicians and others were present, and much enthusiasm was displayed. Hong Kong, April 13. Telegrams have been received from Tonquin announcing that the French expedition had arrived at Honghoa, and at once opened the bombardment against the Chinese. 'The garrison offered but a slightresistance,andspeedilyevacuated tbe town.

Melbourne, April 14.
Arrived, this morning—The steamehip Rome, with the English mail. The smallpox patient on board is Miss Kerruode, of Tasmania. It is reported that another case has arisen among the passengers quarantined at Adelaide.
April 15.
Tawliiao, who is a passenger by the Sornta, for England, paid a visit to the Exhibition buildings to-day.
Th« passengers by the P. and 0. steamship Rome have been ordered into quarantine for a fortnight, and they are all to be vaccinated to-morrow. The report that further cases of smallpox have appeared among the passengers in quarantine at Adelaide is untrue.
Hobart, April 14
The steamship Tosgariro, from London, arrived yesterday, and sailed again last night for Port Chalmers. Sir Julius Vogel is a passenger by the Tongariro for Now Zealand. His health has somewhat improved, but he is Still an invalid.
