Two members of the firm of Parker, solicitors, of Bedford Row, London, absconded on March sth, having misappropriated their clients title deeds. Tho liabilities are between £1,000,000 and £2,000,000. They had borrowed about £50,000 for various speculations. The captain of the steamer Miseio arrived in London on March sth. The Misero was wrecked on tho west coast of Becheen, Sumatra, in November, 1872 (1), and the vessel was looted by the Rajah of Teum. The crew of 25 men, among whom was an American, were taken captive, and are now hold by the Rajah for £62,000 ransom. The English and Dutch have already made efforts to succour the captives.
A terrible explosion occurred in a coal mine at Pocahonta (Virginia) from fire damp. The mine was completely wrecked, and 150 miners were killed. Mrs Langtry has finally decided not to go to Australia this year, her health not being strong enough to stand the journey. In San Francisco her engagement begins on June 16th, after which she returns to England with Mr Solomon. A despatch from Berlin, dated March 3rd, says the German Ministerial organs associate the alliance of Russia, Germany and Austria with the coming league of Continental Powers against the maritime and commercial preponderance of England. Kruez Zleung, .vhich predicts the forming of a league including France, to break the insular supremacy of Fngland, which, it says, by the annexation of Egypt has completed the links of a gigantic chain extending from Gibraltar to (Jbina, and has coiled around the body of Europe, monopolising the commerce of the world and making the Mediterranean Sea an English sea, and making the Indian Ocean an Indian lake. The Berlin Post urges France to pin her allianc e to this policy, promising more substantial benefits than those arising fiom her connection with England. De Buthe, Under Foreign Secretary for Germany, in an article in a German paper remarks that Russia's progress towards India is a matter of indifference to Germany. ‘ England,’ he says, ‘ is no longer our ally, but regards us with evident distrust. These articles suggest a diplomatic campaign against England. The inurdsp of tliG Isto CliiGf of tliG Police has so thoroughly frightened the masses in Russia that it is difficult to obtain a candidate for that force. Archduke John has published a pamphlet on Spiritualism. He says Spiritualism is cherished in huts and palaces in Austria, and in the United States its adherents number 2,000,000. The United States Government is pressing its claim against Spain for 293,000 dollars, the balance of the award due on account of the American losses during the rebellion in Cuba, and also for 6,000,000 dollars for the estates embargoed during the same period, and not restored to their American owners.
Mr Remington, arms manufacturer, of Now York, confesses that the pistol found in the infernal machine at Charing Cross, London, was made by his firm, and that the dynamite had been procured from the same source.
Lord Eustou seeks a divorce from his wife on the ground that she had another husband living when he married her. Levy, corneiist, has commenced a suit against Allison, the Australian manager, for 1259 dollar for breach of agreement, A fire at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, destroyed all the business places on the south side of Queen’s square, including the Post Office and Custom House. The loss is 250,000d015. A heavy snow storm in Canada has caused much damage. Many occupants of houses only escaped through their windows.
The streets of Montreal are thronged with starving immigrants. The discontent in has grown so great that bloodshed is feared, and the Premier warns the Ottawa Government that it will be held responsible. The Fenians are moving actively to take advantage of the prevalent discontent. Port Spain in Trinidad has been almost destroyed by fire. The loss is 400,000 dollars.
Princess Maria Anna has returned to Berlin and rejoined her husband Prince Frederick, thus settling all difficulty. Later in the day she was received by the Emperor and Empress. Tonsey, a New York publisher, was arrested on March 3rd for reprinting a book entitled ‘Memorials of George Fourth.’ It is described as injurious to the community. Tyrone, Fermanagh, and Armagh have been proclaimed under the Crimes Act. All the Irish papers are discussing the emigration question, and in the bitterest spirit. One paper heads an article ‘Bleeding to death,’ and another ‘ Dying by inches,’ Mr Sexton, M.P. for Sligo, has published a letter in London from former Orangemen, whose names and addresses he gave, showing that the Orange organisation is a secret society, and revealing its mysteries and explaining its object to be purely anti-Papist. Sudden and extraordinary activity has developed in the German navy which has caused uneasiness in Paris. Trichinosis, engendered by eating native pork, is ravaging various parts of Germany Joachim Miller has been before Congress on the Mormon question. He urged earnestly against hostilities, and recommended a thorough system of education as the best solvent of the difficulty. He considered the Mormons a community of cranks through ignorance. Mdlle. Nevada (Miss Emma Dixon, of Resse River, mining district, State of Nevada), the latest prima donna, was received into the Catholic Church in Paris on March sth. The affair was reckoned as a great event by society. A new ‘ fuel’ was tried on a tug boat in New York. The result was a tremendous explosion, a fire, and 15,0C0dols. damage, for which the inventors are being sued. • O’Donovan Rossa’s son is in Paris, and Joseph Brady’s brother. Mr Parnell is actively promoting a Company to further emigration from over populated districts in Ireland. The Company has been formed with a capital of £250,000, with Mr Famed as Chairman, and some members of Parliament are among the Directors. The agitation for the explosion of the Orleans Princes from France is constantly gaining strength. Comte de Paris has gone on a six months’ sojurn to Cannes, under private warning. His presence in Paris was fostering a royal intrigue. The New Orleans graveyards are being invaded by robbers, in the hope of finding jewellery and other valuables in the mouldering coffins. It was at one time customary in New Orleans to bury jewellery with the dead of a wealthy Creole family.
