DEATH OF THE DUKE OF ALBANY.
London, March 28
Intelligence is to hand that Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, died suddenly at Cannes, Prance, to day. Later. Telegrams received from Cannes this afternoon regarding the death of the Duke of Albany state that His Royal Highness died at two o’clock this morning in a fit brought on by injuries sustained from a fall met with whils t at the house of the Nautical Club, Cannes. It is announced that the Duke’s body will be brought to England and interred at Frograore, Windsor. The Queen’s projected visit to Darmstadt, Germany, has been abandoned in consequence of the Prince’s decease.
Addresses to her Majesty conveying the condolence. of Parliament will be moved on Monday, by Earl Granville in the Lords and Mr Gladstone in the Commons.

Profound emotion and universal sympathy is being manifested throughout the United Kingdom at the intelligence of the death of the Duke of Albany. The Queen visited the Duchess of Claremont to-day. Her Royal Highness is bearing the shock well, though near her confinement. The Prince of Wales will proceed to Cannes for the purpose of accompany ing the Duke shody to England, Melbourne, March 29. Mr James Service, the Premier, has
telegraphed to the Secretary of State a message of condolence with the Queen
in her bereavement. General reference was made in tho local churches to-day to the death of the Duke of Albany, and the Dead March was played, some edifices being draped in black.
[H.R.H. Duke of Albany, Prince Leopold George Duncan Albert, K.G., Earl of Clarence, and Baron Arklow, Prince of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, fourth son of Queen Victoria, was born at Buckingham Palace. April 7th, 1853. He matriculated at the University of Oxford in 1872, and was created a D.C.L, in 1876. Parliament voted him a grant of £15,000 a year on his attaining his majority, with an addition of ±.10,C00 a year on his marriage. In May 1881, his Royal Highness was created a peer of the realm with the title of Duke of Albany. His marriage with the Princess Frederica Augusta, daughter of His Serene Highness the Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont, was celebrated at Windsor Castle, April 27th, 1882.]
