In the House of Lords to-day Earl Roseberry made a speech, in which he stated that the deportation of French convicts was causing unexampled excitement in the colonies. Earl Granville concurred in Lord Roseberry’s statement, and announced that Lord Lyons, British Ambassador at Paris, had brought to the notice of the French Government the feeling of the colonies, and he had been assured that the bulk of the French convicts are now being sent to Cayenne, South America, and only a selected few to New Caledonia, Paris, March 27.

M, Ferry announced that the Government hoped that a treaty would shortly be concluded with Madagascar, securing due protection to French subjects resident in Malagasay territory. M. Great distress continues to be felt in the north-western portion of this colony owing to the want of rain, and frightful reports have recently come to hand from the Gundadai district, where the longcontinued drought is resulting in the destruction of an immense number of sheep and cattle. The proprietors of the Melbourne Age have organised another expedition to proceed with the exploration of New Guinea, under the leadership of Captain Strahan. The party, which consists of six men, left here for New Guinea.

Rumors are current here that Sir William Jervois will receive the appointment of Governor of Victoria, and that Sir William Robinson, Governor of South Australia, will succeed Sir William Jervois in New Zealand, and Major-General Scratchley will be appointed to South Australia.
