MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
An adjourned meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday, the 28th inst. Members Present—Messrs C. G. Tripp, R. Maokay and A. Hawdon. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr C. G. Tripp was voted to the chair. The Clerk stated that as none of the members of the Board attended on the ordin tv 'By of meeting, he had called an adjourned meeting for that day. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting was read and confirmed. tenders. The following tenders were considered No. 19 contract, building concrete culvert, Peel Forest, Robert Burnett, £ls ; Maurice Lawlor, £l4 15s (accepted). No. 20, building slock bridge, Cattle Valley, R. B. Sibley, £7O ; A. Reed, £65 j J. S. Derby, £64 6s (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. Correepondence received since last meeting was read as follows : From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Christchurch, in answer to the Board’s application for having the land planted, near Fairlie Creek vested in the Board, and stating that before the application could be entertained, a survey by a qualified surveyor would have to be made, and the other conditions of the Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act Amendment Act of 1872, complied with. Resolved— 1 That rhe required survey be be made as soon as possible, and the plan when completed be forwarded to the Commissioner of Crown Lands.’ From the Geraldine County Council, stating that a subsidy of £ for £ would be made to the Board for money expended on the destruction of small birds or their eggs. The Clerk was directed to post up notices on the Pound and other public places in the district intimating that small birds or their eggs will be paid for by the Board at the price mentioned by the Council.
From the Geraldine Road Board, in reference to the payment of the balance due for work done on the Rangitata station road, stating that upon receipt of the amount the agreement would be handed over to the Mount Peel Board. From Messrs White and Smithson, solicitors ferwarding a deed of release of the agreement between the Geraldine and Mount Peel Board for the maintenance of the station road.
The deed being duly signed, the Clerk was instructed to make the necessary exchange of deeds with the Geraldine Board, and to pay over to that Board the balance of amount due to them for work done on the road.
From Mr Thomas Edwards, signifying his consent to the taansfer of roaa line to Opuha bridge. From the Prouincial District Auditor, requesting that the accounts of the Board be made up ready for his audit. The Clerk was directed to attend to the matter.
From the Chamber of Commerce, Christchurch, soliciting the attendance of a representative from the Board at a meeting to be held in Christchurch on March 29th, for the purpose of protesting against the increased railway tariff, The Clerk was directed to reply, stating that the Board regrets that the notice came too late to enable them to comply with the request, but that they fully sympathise with the movement.
From Mr F. Newman, offering! a price for the iron blown off the roof of the Pound. The Clerk stated that he had received an offer of a similar amount from another person. Resolved—‘That Mr_ Newman’s being the only written tender it be accepted. INSTRUCTIONS TO OVERSEER. The Overseer was directed to have the iron on the roof of the Pound properly secured to prevent its being again blown off; also to report upon the crossing of the creek near Mr Dennistoun’s and advise
what is best to be dene to prevent it damaging the road, INTERVIEWS. Mr Flatman had an interview with the Board, requesting that the timber along the unformed road in Peel Forest be cleared off, as the Iste heavy gales had blown down a number of trees and done heavy damage to his fences. Resolved—‘That tenders for purchase of the timber along the line ol road be called for next Board day.’ Mr Wheelband waited on the Board in reference to replacing trees killed by frost in the plantation reserves. The consideration of the matter was deferred to a full meeting of the Board. MISCELLANEOUS. The question which two of the present members of the Board should retire was considered, when it was decided that Mr 0. G. Tripp and Mr Mackay should retire, and that the election of new members in their room should be held on May the 7th. It was also decided that the annual meeting of ratepayers should be held on Msy Ist. Resolved—‘That if the contractor for forming Jefcoate’s road has not yet began work the contract be taken out of his hands and tresh tenders called by next Board day.’ ‘ That tenders be called for clearing the timber off the road through Ashbp’s section, Orari Gorge.’ ACCOUNTS. After passing accounts to the amount of £250 8s 4d, the Board adjourned.
