DUNEDIN MARKETS

Mr L. Maclean, under arrangements with the British and New Zealand Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, reports for the week ending March 26th as follows : Fat Cattle -For to-day's market there were only 135 head yarded, nearly all of which were very ordinary quphty, only a few pens being anything like prime. These latter realised prices about equal to last week's quotations ; but on the whole the market was a shade easier, and in fact sales were difficult to effect at almost any price—especially for medium quality, Best bullocks fetched from £7 10s to £lO 10s ; others, £5 10s to £7 ; cows and heifers, from £5 to £6 7s 6d ; and one extra prime cow to £9. I quote prime beef at from 17s 6d to 20s per IOOIbs. Fat Sheep—26B6 were penned for today's market. This number, although medium, proved quite in excess of trade requirements, and but for the fact that several lines were taken by graziers, a heavy decline would have had to be accept i ; as it was, a drop of about Is per head from last week's prices was quite apparent, and sales very difficult to effect. Best crossbreds brought from 13s to 17s 6d ; one pen of very superior Leicester ewes brought up to 18s ; merinos, light weights, 7s 3d to 9s. Fat Lambs—3B4 penned, and sold up to 10s Gd per head. Fat Calves—Thirteen yarded, and sold up to 21s. Pigs—Thirty-seven forwarded, and sold at from 14s to 60s each.

Sheepskins—Dry crossbreds, Is 6d to 2s 6d ; do merino, 2s to 3s 9d ; pelts, 7d to lOd ; green skins, la 3d to Is 6d ; lambskins, ls4d to Is 6d ; and have sold privately during the week 1150 green skins at from Is 3d to Is Bd, according to quality. Hides— There is a steady d3mand, and all lots coming forward are readily placed at last quotations. Tallow is still in good demand. I have cleared all lots to hand at for rough fat, 18s to 22s 6d ; medium, 20s to 24s per cwt.

Grain— On account of the very unfavorable weather for harvesting, very little is doing as yet, the only samples coming to hand being from South Canterbury. During the week I have sold 1000 sacks Northern wheat at from 3s 9d to 4s per bushel, bags weighed in. Oats are inquired for, but at the present time the market is bare. Quotations : Milling, 2s to 2s 2d ; feed, 2s to 2s Id.
