TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
The annual meeting of the Tinuru Harbor Board was held last Tuesday, there bei.ig present—Mr Moody (Chair-in-in), Messrs E. Kl worthy, A. Hayes. J. Kelland, J. H. Sutter, and M. Jonas. Mr Moody was re-elected Chairman, and the annual meeting adjourned till the 13th March. Thfl ordinary meeting of the Board then took place. Among the correspondence was a letter from the Timaru agent of the N.Z. Grain Agency Company, objecting to a claim against the Company for £23 2s for damages caused by the s.s. Korauni corning in contact with one of the piles of the wharf, as excessive. The Engineer and Harbor Master were instructed to report. Messrs McK':.zi- j and Co., contractors for the last extension rf the wharf, again wrote offering to compromise the amount of penalty incurred by them. The Board decided not to accept any further com~ promise. The Engineer, on account of a letter received, was instructed to report on the durability of jarrah piles. A letter from Mr J. H. Smith, offering to lease about two chains of the beach, eiglit or ten chains north of the Landing Service, for stvimmiug baths, was referred to the Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr J. Anderson, junr., trustee for Mrs Pope, re claim o£ the late Mr Pope against the Board for work done on the Titan. The Boaid had determined not to pay the full claim by £179. Mr Anderson now wrota off-ring to ' split the difference.' It was decided to refuse this offer Prom the Ch u'rman of the Canterbury Marine Underwriters Association re insurance rate;*. The wliter expressed a; hope that thn efforts of the Board to improve the safety of the port would watrant the Association in removing the mi qualities and drawbacks on marine insurance at the port of Timaru as suggested by the Board's resolution. The Engineer's report stated that daring the ironth 14ft of foundation blocks had been laid, and a 19ft monolith completed. Apr>n and pell-mell blocks badbeen laid the whole length of th& work. The T wharf contract was now out of the contractors' hands. The ironb;irk timber contract was expected to be completed in a week or two. He had inspec'ed the new crane in Uunedin last week and found it in a very forward st.'ie. He recommended the tendering for another 200 tons of cement. The Priest in an dredge would shortly require lepairing. The Board decided to call for tenders for 2000 tons cement. The Standing Committee were requested to report at next meeting as to the advisability of erecting a store in which to receive goods intended for shipment either at the wharf or Landing Service. Also as to cost and holding capacity of same. Tne Manager of the Landing Service reported, under date January 31st, that v«ry little work had been done during the. month. The gross earnings had been; £214 16s 4d, and the net £24 14s sd. Mr Elworthy moved, Mr Wilson seconded, and it was carried unanimously —'lhat the Standing Committee be instructed to enquire into the woiking of the Landing Service with a view to ascertaining whether a change in the shipping arrangements cannot ba made soon.* Mr Sutter was of opinion that th* Sarvioe could be eLut up when another
100 feet had been added to the wharf, as the boats could be loaded and discharged at the wharf. Tenders were received for the contraction of steel lighters for the Board, but as tenders had not been advertised for it waß resolved to defer consderation of the game till next meeting. The Hirhor Master's report v.;;< read, but ii contained little matter of interest. The meeting then terminated.
