TEMUKA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

The usual monthly meeting of the -Committee of the above school was held last Tuesday evening, Present— Messrs Kirk (Chairman), Blyth, Bayhurst, Miles, Edgeler, Bolton and the Rev D. Gordon. MINUTES, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was lead : From the Board of Education giving the names of the persons nominated to fill the vacant seats on the Education Board, and asking the Committee to nominate three members. Mr Blyth proposed ' That the names of the Rev D. Gordon, Mr R. A. Barker and Mr W. J. Steward be submitted to the Board for election." The motion was seconded by Mr Edgeler and carried unanimously. From Mr Jame& Bruce, Chairman of the meeting held in Timaru, stating that the action of the South Canterbury Education Board in making District High Schools of the Temuka and Waimate schools had been condemned by the meeting, and giving other information with reference to what was done. The Chairman stated that he would have attended the meeting only that he knew it was held to condemn the District High Schools, and as he was in favor of these schools he fel the would be alone there. This was the principal reason that made him absent himself. From the Board of Education, intimating that the sum of £lB 13s 9d had been placed to the credit of the incidental fund of the Committee. From the same, giving some information re scholarships. From the same, enclosing a circular asking the Chairman to sign a certificate to the effect that the teachers had satisfactorily performed their duties. In 1882 the Committee had declined to sign a similar certificate, and on the motion of the Rev D. Gordon, seconded by Mr Miles, it was resolved—" That the Secretary write to the Board drawing attention, to thu letter written in 1882, and pointing out that they did not consider the Chairman ought to be ask ed to sign the certificate." From the same asking information regarding Maori and half-caste children. It was decided to hand the circular over to the head master. From the Rev D. Gordon, and Mr R. A. Barker consenting to be nominated as members of the Board of Education. HEAD MASTER'S REPORT. From the Headmaster, intimating that the attendance for the paat month had been as follows :—Bovs : 188 ; girls, 150; total, 338 ; strict average attendance : Boys, 135 ; girls, 104 ; total, 239, Working average : Boys, 144 ; girls, 114 ; total, 258. Highest attendance, on the 6th February: Boys, 153 ; girls, 128 ; total, 281. He also pointed out that rulers and other requisites were wanted for the new desks. The play ground required to be levelled,,' The sum of £1 2s 5d was enclosed for school books. SCHOOL REQUISITS. It was decided to write agfiin to the Board, pointing out that the ink-wells and other articles asked for had not yet been supplied. SECONDARY FEESj It was decided that the Headmaster should collect the secondary education fees. TREE PLANTING. J?he Rev. D. Gordon asked when it was intended to plant. He thought it was time the land should be levelled. No action was taken in the matter. THE STAFF. It was resolved that the Secretary be instructed to ask the Board if they could see their way clear to appoint Miss Brown as assistant mistress, especially as the average attendance almost entitles the school to this addition. JANITOR. Seven applications for the position of janitor were received, and after some conversation Mr Bolton moved—" That Mr Boulter be appointed." Mr Miles seconded the motion. The Rev. Mr Gordon moved, as an amendment—" That the matter be postponed until next meeting." Mr Blyth seconded the amendment. Alter a good deal of discussion, the Rev. D. Gordon withdrew bis first amendment and moved—" That Mr Batterby be re-appointed." After a long discussion, Mr Batterby was re-appointed. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Miles and Blyth were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month, 1U« meeting sh»n adjourned.
