A MAN BURIED ALIVE.
Considerable excitement was occasionei at Hay, N,!7.W., by a shocking occurrence which took place on 13th November at a selection near the town. A labouring man known as Jimmy Work, employed in renewing the slabs in a deep well, was suddenly overtaken by a sanddrift, which buried him up to his neck. Realising his perilous position, while gridually sinking in the treacherous soil, he shouted out to his mate, Petersen, who was above, to run hastily and procure assistance—which could only be procured at a quarter of a mile distant. Petersen lost no time in getting help, and when he ran back to the well found Jimmy Work still alive, but in much danger, apparently greatly exhausted. As he was gradually, but surely, sinking in the sand, Work was heard to exclaim, "My God ! I'll.never get out of this." Petersen having been let down the well, endeavored to rescue his companion, who repeatedly urged on his exertions, when suddenly another influx of sand occurred, which completely buried Work, and compelled Petersen to seek his own safety by being drawn up. Night coming on, nothing further could be done for tha doomed man. Next day renewed efforts were made to get him out, and the police having been informed of the occurrence, visited the scene of the accident. All efforts were, however, unsuccessful, and fresh operations were to be begun by some experienced diggers.
