ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Jan. 18. The P. and 0. steamship Mirzapore takes £300,000 in gold coin for Sydney, Jan. 19. The Times to-day announces that as a result of the recent Conference at Sydney the British Government will probably undertake the maritime defence of New Guinea. Jau. 21. It is announced that Baron Macleay, the New Guinea explorer, will return to New Guinea at nn early date.
Bishop Moran, of Ossory, Ireland, the newly appointed Archbishop of Sydney, has been summoned by the Pope to Rome, where he will be appointed a Cardinal, prior to' his departure for Sydney. William Holmes, the Liberal M.P. for Paisley, which place he has represented since 1870, has resigned his seat in the House of Commons. It is announced that H.M.S. Carysfort, one of the vessels of the Mediterranean Squadron, lias been ordered to Suez, whence she will convey Colonel Gordon (Gordon Pasha), to Souakim, in the Red Sea, on his special mission to the Soudan. Jan." 22. Five packages containing dynamite have been discovered in a tunnel noar Euston Square railway station. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales was about to travel northwards by the Londou and North-western line, but the discovery was made prior to his departure. It is believed that it was intended to wreck the train by which the Prince proposed to travel, and it is thought that the projected outrage is the work of Fenian emissaries. (Jp to the present time no arrests have been made by the police. The discovery caused much excitement and indignation.
The Victorian gunboats will be tried on the Tyue on Wednesday and Thursday next, and, if successtul, they will sail for their destination on the following Saturday, The health of Her Majesty the Queen is unsatisfactory, and she is unable to stand for more than a few minutes.

Queensland is offering to convert two and a-half million bonds into inscribed stock. Vienna, Jan. 20. .The Russian Foreign Minister is now on a visit to this city. His Excellency received a cordial welcome on arrival, and fetes have been organised in his honor. Cairo, Jan. 20. Communication by telegraph with Khartoum was restored to day, but no intelligence of importance has been, re ceived here from the Soudan. Jan. 21. News to baud from the Soudan states that Baker Pasha, since his arrival, ha? been parleying with the sheiks of desert Arab tribes, and with considerate success, several of those who have been in the rebellion having submitted to the Egyptian Government. ♦ AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Jan. 22. A case of suspected robbery and murder is reported to have occurred near Geelong. Francis Beech, a farmer living at Retavel, was found to have been murdered in his house, and his wife was found in a dying state. The house has been ransacked throughout. No arrests have yet been made.
