Tenders were to-day invited for a loan of one million sterling, for the colony of New Zealand, the rate of Jnterest being 4 per cent, and the minimum £9B 10s.

News has been received that the British-India Steam Navigation Company’s steamship Duke of Westminster, 2427 tons, from Brisbane (left November 6th), ran ashore on the Isle of Wight and is in a critical position. All the passengers have been landed in safety. Tugs have gone to the vessel’s assistance. A Note has been addressed by the Egyptian Government to the British Foreign Minister, in which a demand is made for England’s assistance in the Soudan. The Note states that unless this be accorded the Egyptian Government will be compelled to relinquish to 'Turkey the eastern portion of the f?oudan, ard concentrate its troops in Egypt Proper, r.nd thus be able to dispense with the British army of occution. It is reported that France forbids Turkey to interfere in the Soudan, but has offered to repel El Mahdi if England declines to. The Bom an Catholic Bishops of Australia have recommended either Archbishop Croke or Professor Morgan Walsh, of Maynooth College, to succeed Archbishop' Vaughan in the metropolitan Archbishopric of Australia. The New South Wales revenue last quarter amounted to £1,860,000, being a decrease of £226,500 compared with the December quarter of 1882. The revenue for the year ended 31st ult. amounted to £6,480,000, a decrease of £942,000 compared with that for 1882. During the year the revenue from land decreased by £1,040,000. The want of rain is now being severely felt throughout the colony.
