Cbicot.—On Friday next a match will be played on the Geraldine Oral between the Christchurch College boys and a picked team from the Geraldino Cricket Club. POBLIC MEETING AT PLEASANT VALLEY. —-To>morrow evening a public meeting con vened by the Chairman of the Geraldine Road Board, will be hold in the schoolroom, Pleasant Valley, at half-past seven o'clock, for the purpose of considering the proposed alteration in the postal arrangements for the district.

Accident.— Mr Job Brown njrrowly escaped a serious accident early on Monday last. He was riding a young horse, and the girth of his saddle was loose. This allowed the saddle to turn, and Mr Brown was thrown heavily to the road on his head, causing him to lose consciousness. He was able to get abdut during the day The accident hap pened on a road nenr the Temuka Catholic Church.

Infanticide.—A case of infanticide was reported in Wellington on Saturday mornii.g. A young girl named Kate Boylan. aged 19, who was engaged as a domestic servant to a gentleman in Wellington, gave birth on that morning to a full-grown female child, and subsequently it was discovered in an outhouse. The body was removed and is awaiting an inquest. The mother of the child was taken to the Hospital in the afternoon. An axe stained with blood has been discovered. The Chbistchuboh Unemployed.— Messrs Rolleston and Mitchelson received a deputation from the unemployed working men at the City Council Chambers last Saturday night. They were addressed by the Major aud Messrs Montgomery, Holmes, Wynn-Wiiliams, and White, who strongly urged the necessity of finding immediate work for the married men. The unemployed represent 1234 persons in dessitute circumstances. 307 signed the petition. The Ministers said they would consider what could be done. A large crowd of men were outside waiting the resuit, but they were very

orderly. Strange Death.—An inquest was held in Wellington on Thursday on the body of a young woman named Florence Wovely, aged 19, who wa3 found dead in bed at her employer's residence. The medical evidence went to show that there were no signs of tiolence present, and on carefully examining the whole of the internal organs, they were found to be in a perfect state of health. The brain was also healthy, and no pathological change whatever was observable sufficient to account for her death. The contents of the stomach had not been analysed, but had been carefully secured aud handed over to the police for that purpose if necessary. There was a slight discoloration about the hands and face.

Captain Rt/sseli. and the Tihaeit Harbor.—Captain Russell has informed the Dunedin press that he has not made any report to the Underwriters' Association about the Timaru Harbor for some years. The information referred to by tke Equitable Insurance Company, and which formed the subject of a discussion at the Timaru Harbor Board's meeting on Wednesday, was obtained from a plan of the Timaru Harbor Works on which is shown the berth occupied by ships which load there for Home ports. It is shown that at this berth, marked A on the plan, there was only 19 feet of water at the foremast, and 19J- feet at the mainmast. The plan carries at the head of it the following memo, signed by the Harbor Master of Timaru, Captain Webster: Arauco *nd Norway finished loading at this berth (A). Waimate left at first quarter ebb, drawing 18 feet 6 inches on even keel, on September 10th at 11 p.m.; September 11th, high water, 9.5 p.m." MASONIC—-The regular meeting of the brethren of Lodge Southern Star, No. 619, S.C., whs held in the ball, Geraldine, on Thursday night last, the W.M. Bro. W. Young presiding, supported on his right by Bro. Thos. Turnbull, 8.W.D.D.5r.M.,8r0. A. Dunnett W.M. (Winchester), Bro. W. De Renzy, P.W.M. (Winchester), and on the left by D. Clouston J.P.M., Bro. J. Heney, P.M. and Bro. A. R. Kirk, P.M. (Canteibury Lodge). A large number of brethren and visitors were also present. The W.M. was congratulated on the able and efficient manner in which the business of the Lodge was conducted. The hall has been newly plastered throughout and painted outside, the work being faithfully executed by W.M. Bro. Toung and Bros. Berry and Taylor, and a resolution was passed during the meeting to have new seatings provided. Light refreshments were dispensed by Bro. Bowdem and due justice done thereto, and the meeting terminated after spending a very enjoyable evening.

Supbemb Coubt.—At the Supreme Court, Tiuuaru, on Fridav, Frederick Charles Hour don was charged with embezzling three sums of money belonging to his employers, the New Zealand Grain Agency and Mercantile Company, riz., on the 16th March last, £l4 2s; on 9th April £22 2s 9d; and on 37th April, £6 17s 4d. A second indictment charged him with embezzling three other sums from the same firm, riz., on the 14th of June, £55 ; on 21st July, £4 13s 9d , and on the 14th August, £6 13s 9d. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty with a recommendation of mercy. His Honour (Mr Justice Johnson) sentenced accused to 12 months imprisonment. On Saturday, James;,Ch*yne was indicted for, on the 21st July last f assaulting William Meyers with intent to rob him, ho being then armed, a second count charging liim with common assault. A secoi.d indictment charged him with demanding money from Mej-ers with threats and menaces. Prisoner was found not guilty on the fir.-t count, and guilty on the charge of common assault. The second indictment was withdrawn. His Worship teutincdd prisoner to 7 laouUi's imprisonment.

Trade is dull, and wonderful are the step<s that are being taken to put some life into it. A nenr idea worthy of ago ahead Yankee has been introduced into Timaru by Messrs Gabites and Plante, They have introduced an Art Union system under which any one purchasing £2 worth of goods in their shop will get a ticket and run the chance of winning a prize. Another Timaru firm of drapers issued u circular in which it was insinuated that the watches offered by Messrs Gabites and Plante belonged lo the class known hj the name of "Brummagem" jewellery. This brought Messrs Gabites and Plante again to the fore. They got a jeweller to examine the watches, and he pronounced them to be value for wbafc was claimed for them, viz., £3O, £2O, £ls, &o. The prizes and the jeweller's certificate wero exhibited in Messrs Gabitiis and Plantes window last Saturday, and were the cynosure of all]eye.». The result of this step was tbat on Saturday the house was crowded with customers, aad there was no necsssity of complaining of hard times. 4
