The Temuka Leader TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1883. GOVERNMENT INHUMANITY.
The Christchurch Chamber of Commerce has brought the Ministry to their senses. Representations were made to them to send the Government 6teamer Stella to search for the castaway crew of the Sarah W. Hunt, tut tbey replied that she could not be spared. The inhuman conduct of the Government excited indignation throughout the colony. The Chrißtcburch Chamber of Commerce met, und raised £6OO by public subscription to charter a vessel for the parpose of searching for the castaway Bailors, and the Press throughout th*s colony condemned the action of the Government. This had the effect of opening the eyes of the Ministry to existing realities ; they saw their supporters nnd opponents alike disgusted with tlipm. The Stella which could not possibly be spared the day before wan now got ready in a few hours and despatched on her errand of mercy. The conduct of the Ministry in this matter is disgraceful. Until they found their supporters indignant they would not budge an inch. They had no pity for the unfortunate sailors whoso death may possibly result from their dilatoriness, but the moment they found the people demanding it of them they became all obedient. Heaven protect the Colony that is dependant on them.
