ASHBURTON COUNTY CO. F. GERALDINE CO.

This match came off at Gdraldine yesterday, the weather being all that could be desired. The ground was in excellent order. Several ladies graced the play with their presence in the pavilion. Mr Thoma 3 captained the Ashburton, and Mr Pearpoint the Geraldine feam. Dr Fish and Mr Willoughby acted as umpiref. The Geraldine team won the toss, and sent Lodge and Ogilvie to the wickets, which, through a mistake in a telegram sent to Ashburton, were not pitched till 1 p m., the Ashburton boys arriving by the express train instead of by the early morning one. Lodge, however, had soon to retire, having been caught by Jephson after scoring 2, and his place was taken by Moore, who held his wicket for some time. Ogilvie soon after retired, scoring two, being bowled by Prebble. Godby then took Ogilvie's place. The two best men of the Geraldinians were thus at either end of the wickets, and some pretty play was shown, | "unfortunately only for a short time however, Moore being bowled by Prebble, going out for 7. Temple then went to the wicket, and after scoring 10 was also bowled ont by Prebble. Bethune was next sent to the wicket, but immediately retired with a duck's egg. Pearpoint soon went out for 2. Briscoe was caught by Caygill, and left the wicket for 3. Godby held his wicket for a long while, but was at last caught bv Caygill, and went out for 22. He was loudly cheered on his retiring. Eight wickets were then down for 58 runs. Coltman next took possession of the wicket, Templar being his visa-vis. They played n yery pretty game for some time, but Templar was bowled out eventually by Prebble. Macdonald was the last in for the local team, and after playing a pretty game was ultimately caught by Simpson, scoring 8, with Coltman 2%, not out. Total for Geraldine's first. innings, 99. The fielding of the Ashburton team : wss anything but good.

The Asi burton team sent Thomas and Crocker to the wickets first, but 'the foirner retired to a ball fromßothune. C. Jephaon succeed him, but had to walk out for a duck’s egg, and Simpson took his place. Crocker, after holding own for some time, was run out, after scoring 9. Prebble followed, but was soon out with a ball from Pearpoint, with 3 runs to his credit, the first four being then out for 18. Caygill then took the wicket, and Simpson wat bowled out by Pearpoint for 4 Makeig was bowled out by Pearpoint for 2. Six wickets were then down for 35 runs. Leahy followed at the wicket, and was soon out for 1 by a ball from Bethune. Andrews was then sent in. Caygill after good play was bowled out by Pearpoint for 13 runs. The game then stood at eight wickets down for 41 runs. Jephson took Caygill’s place, but soon retired with a duck’s egg. Andrews, not out, 4 The fielding of Geraldine was just the opposite to that of their opponents. The Geraldine team then went in for their second innings, Lodge and Moore going to the wickets. Moore went out to a ball from Crocker and Coltman took IPs place. When the latter had scored 15 his wickets were lowered by a ball from Makeig. Macdonald then went to the wicket, the scores standing 2 wickets down for 30. The Ashburton team having to leave, the stumps were drawn at ten minutes to five p.rr-. Geraldine— First Innings. J.
