CRICKET.

GERALDINE V. OTA 10. On Saturday last a match was played between the members of the Geraldine and Otaio Cricket Clubs. The weather was anything but pleasant, a cold southwester blowing all the time. The Otaio men arrived on the ground shortly before noon, and the match commenced. The visitors were captained by Mr Rhodes, And the Geraldine team by Mr Pearpoint, Dr Fish and Mr D. McKenzie acted as umpires, with tbeir usual ability. Otaio won the toss and went first to the wickets.

The fielding throughout the day was most disagreeable work, and bowling against the wind almost impossible. There were very few residents present to view the play. Otaio sent Jefferson and Lough to bat, the former playing a very steady innings, showing good cricket. He outstayed the latter, who went in for a score. When the scor« stood at 50 Pearpoint lowered his middle stump. Peacock then gave Ledge a very mild catch and retired, having made six. Godby followed, who kept his wicket throughout the innings, playing a very good steady game. Perry, who .at the first appeared out of practice, yet showed some of'his old style. Reeves, who was expected to give, the Geraldine team some trouble, luckily tor them, was run out. The rest of the team did not add materiallyto the score,'which, at the termination of the innings stood at

112. The bowlers for Geraldine were Pearpoint and Bethune at first, but the latter showed he was unable to perform his duties against so Btrong a wind and Fred Fish succeeded him. Shortly after Pearpoint and himself changed ends. The wind gave the batsmen great advuntage. Several changes were afterwards made in the bowling, Pearpoint giving way to Moore, and Fish to Lodge. The bowling of both the latter was most creditable.

The Geraldine team in their first innings were very unfortunate, with the exception of Moore who, by good play, made 18. Not one of the others made any show. This was due to the bowling of Godby, but the queer left-handed bowling of Love; v ve, whose pitch varied greatly much, sever.*! of the batsmen. The Geraldine eleven went out for their first innings for* 45. Time allowing, they followed for their second innings and were more successful, making 107 before the last wicket fell. The highest scorers were Moore 46, and Lodge 28. The former’s play was excellent, and the latter played well and freely, but succumbed at last to a very mild underhand sent down by Godby. This bowling was very successful and seemed to puzzle the batsmen. Reeves, Lovegrove and Peacock were the other bowlers,, but Godby took nearly all the wickets. The fielding on both sides was very fair, especially that of Jefferson for the Otaio. After taking of the hospitality of the local team, at the Crown Hotel, and a return match arranged for at an early date the Otaio team left Geraldine amid the cheers of the Geraldine eleven.
