"GENERAL M'IVOR" AND NEW GUINEA.

The New Zealand Herald's London correspondent gives the following particulars regarding General M'lvor's expedition to New Guinea, which has been mentioned iri our cable columns recently ,' —" A company, to be called the New Guinea Colonisation and Tradiog Company, is projected in London for t!.e purpose of establishing a trading settlement in New Guinea and other adjacent islands. The scheme is at present in embryo, but 1 have learnt soma particulars in regard to it which will enable colonists to form some opinion as to its prospect of success. It is being organised by a gentleman named HM M'lvor, who, 1 understand, served as Lieut.General of a brigade in the late Servian war, and held a command in the Greek army when hostilities with Turkey were said to be imminent. He is a tall, athletic energetic man of good military bearing, about 40 years of age. His idea is to' take out under his personal command a pioneer expedition* to New Guinea to explore the island and establish a settlement, which will form.a nucleus for further development of ' the company. The expedition would be composed of gentlemen who would be required to provide their own equipment. They must be of good physique, and willing to submit to military discipline, as it is considered absolutely imperative that full power must be exercised by:;the commanders. Genera) M'lvor has already received numerous applications from adventurous young men who are anxious to join the expedition. Some,: who had .intended to settle in the North Western States of America have preferred to make a trial of tropica! New Guinea instead. The project, it is said, 'willbe carried out on the basis of fair \ and friendly dealing with; the natives,' and the only strong measures which will be taken will be such (self-defence) as may be necessary to protect the lives of the expedition. The headquarters of the Company will bo in London, and supreme control will be vested in the Board of Directors. Skilled mechanics, agriculturists aud miners, will be selected to accompany the expedition, and an experienced medical staff also, The company will be willing to work in full harmony with, and, if desirable, under the control of the Colonial Governments, and the promoters hope to stcu-e the unofficial acquiescence of the Imperial Governnient in their scheme. A paragraph in the Echo elicited fro l *) General M'lvor an explanation. He had no intention of emulating the practices of 'Captain Kidd,' and, indeed, so surely harmless and commercial was his scheme, that he believed that he could .obtain for it the approval and even the patronage of the most fervent of the peaco-at any-piica party in the United Kingdom."
