CONCERT AT ORARI.
On Friday evening last a very successful concert was given in tbe Orari schoolroom, there being a good attendance, the Rev, D Gordon, of Terauka, occupying the chair. The programme commenced by Mrs Edmonds singing ‘ God Bless the Prince of Wales’ in a very feeling manner. Mr Rutland followed with‘Nancy Lee,’which he sang in his usual good taste and style. ‘ Thy voice is always near’ was sung with much pathos by Miss McNair, who was followed by Master W Sherratt, who gave a recitation, ‘Spanish champion,’ very correctly and with much power and expression, but greatly marred by a bad cold. Mr Clinch gave a comic song ‘ A twopenny ride in a tram car’ in his usual amusing style. The audience loudly demanded an encore, and he then favored them with ‘ Walking on the sands,’ Miss Klee very creditably sang * Venita,’ and was followed by Miss McLeod who recited ‘ The gambler’s wife ’ in a pathetic and touching manner, iMr Edmonds’ song 1 1 fear no foe ’ was excellently rendered. The first part of the programme being concluded the Rev D Gordon distributed the prizes to the school children, and in doing so remarked that it should be the means of inducing all toimaka further exertions in their studies. This was a very interesting interlude;
The second part of the programme commenced With an overture on the piano by Miss Blyth, which was well executed, Mr Binskin followed with the song ‘ Molly Darling/ and Mr J L Cooke gave a reading from ‘ Pickwick ’ splendidly. Miss Klee sang ‘ Won’t you buy ray pretty flowers ’ in a very pleasing manner. A recitation by Master McLeod was fairiy rendered. Miss Rutland followed with the song ‘ To-morrow ’ very correctly. A little more confidence will make her a first class vocalist, Mr Edmonds having given a song ‘ The three jolly smokers,’ Mr Ensor gave for a reading a passage from one of Dickens’ works. Mr Clinch’s comic song ‘I shall never make a gentleman of you, John,’ was received with great applause, and a sung by Mr Rutland was ranch appreciated. This closed the programme, and after the usual votes of thanks the singing of ‘ God save the Queen ’ by all present terminated the concert.', The room was then cleared for dancing which was kept up till daylight. Thanks must be awarded to those ladies who had charge of the refreshments, which were plentiful , and procurable at a very moderate figure.
