SOUTH CANTERBURY BOARD OF EDUCATION.
A meeting of the above Board took place last Thursday, there being present— Rev. dßarclay (Chairman), Messrs R A Barker, MJGny, S W Goldsmith, W J Stewrrd, J Talbot, E Wakefield, and R B Walcot.
Among the business transacted the following of interest to this district occurred :
The report of .the Committee re distribution of extra capitation grant and staff of District High Schools was read as follows : ,
' (1) That from the Ist October current, salaries of teachers (not including any payment to or on account of pupil touchers) under £l5O per annum be increased at the rate of Is 6d in the £, and that salaries over £250 per annum be augmented at the rate of Is in the £ (no allowance for lodgings to be reckoned as sa'ary) ; and that the sums paid as incidentals be increased at the rate bf Is 4d in the £.
' (2) That only graduates of some University, be appointed as head masters of District High echools, and that ■ tlje present masters of such schools, should they desire to retain their respective positions, be requested within a time to be approved by the Board, to attain that,statues in connection with the University of New Zealand. That the salaries of Head Masters be according to scale, plus 60 per cent both of the fees for secondary education and of any augmentation the Board from time to time may grant. That the second, masters be certificated teachers, and that'their-salaries be' : according to scale and not less than £l2O, plus 40 per cent of the sums referred to in the case of head masters. Thnt the augmentation for the present be £ for £.mrrespect of moneys accruing as fees.' ■:U t;: After some-discussion on the first clause it J was passed, Messrs Talbot, Gray, and Barker voting against it, and the whole report was adopted,
It was resolved—' That: the salary of the first mistress in a District High School bo £l2O as a" minimum, and according to tlie scale when abovo that amount.'
The acting Inspector, Mr Gnrr, gave in reports of examinations of 14 schools. Tbe result of examition at Winchester showed a per centage.of: passes in standards of 58,7 ; ; Soufh ,Prar|,/ 76.7 ; Pleasant Point, 72.3 ; Burkes Pass, 100Fairlie Creek, 84.6 and Albury, 85. In reply to questions Mr Gurr said the upper standards at Wincliester were very weak indeed. He found after his examination that the children in the upper standards passed with difficulty last year; and being advanced the collapse had come this year. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Winchester Committee, drawing attention to the low average of passes obtained. It was That in future no deputation be received unless notice of the business to be brought forward has been given by letter addressed to the Chairman, not later than threo days previous to the Board's sitting.' |f The applicatious received for the posts of second master and of mistress at the Temnka school were ordered to be forwarded to the Committee. An application for a division fence between the boys' and girls' grounds was referred to the Chairman and Secretary, Chairman said a division fence'was very' desirable, but he though the Board before erecting it should obtain a refund*.of the £2O given to the Committee about two years ago for planting, but never made use of for that purpose. The Woodbury. Gpmmtyeeej wrote asking the Board tn allow' »' pupil teacher to i be, .appointed, as the jinistre^s. wa ( s unable to give proper.,attention to the number of cliiWreriin 'her room.' Finally it was decided that, ;the, scale.should..; be adhered to, and the Secretary 'was instructed to inform life Woodbury'Committee that they were hot. to the pupil teacher they asked, for, and to.suggest that by'making' ah'effort they -might bring up the average to 80. •■'•• The Master, at Qrari Bridge (Mr Westropp), who has only been there a few months, sent in his resignation. It was decided that, undercheciriuustances, Mr VVesuopp be asked to pay 'the cost of advertising for a successor.. <■ f The Ohair•harl , stated that no! iord had been received frhm the Chief Surveyor with regard to the transfer to the Board of a site' for'the Belfield ischool. The Secretary was directed to remind Mr Baker of the business, and press, for its completion' ■ ,; •
Mr Talbot stated that the roof of the Waitohi school, an old one of shingles, was leaking consideraoly, and asked that the architect be sent out to report upon it. At the suggestien of tho Chairmrn, however, he undertook to get a local man to report. v :!
The Secretary stated that the results of the last examination of pupil teachers would be made known to the/ candidates on Saturday. ; ; ! '• • V /
