MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held in the Road Board Office, Peel Forest, on Friday, the 19th inst. Pre - sent—The Hon; J. B. Acland (Chairman), Messrs C. G. Tripp, R. Maekay, G. J. Dennistoun and J. Heney. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Tenders for the following; works were opened and considered:—• No. 12 Contract—Shingling the road to the opuha Bridge —Thomas Corkrey, £7O; Stephen Courtney, £53 (accepted). No. 13—Shingling Clayton road—Patrick Burke, £185; Thomas Corkery, £139 (accepted) ; Stenhen Courtney, £137. The following carrespondence was read and considered :

From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Christ church, stating that certificate of title for reserves 1803, 2163 and 2167 conveying > the same to the Board would be prepared* and issued.

From the Geraldine Road Board, giving the area and number of ratepayers in the district. .

Resolved—" That the Clerk acknowledge the receipt of the same and supply the Geraldine Board with the same particulars in respect to the Mount Peel district." From Mr G. I. Hamilton, consenting to the alteration of road line in sections 28417 and 28416; also calling attention to the necessity, of shingling and otherwise improving th« Clayton main road

The Clerk was directed to reply stating that the contract for shingling a portion of Clayton main road had been let that day. From Mr Thomas Jefcoal e, requesting that the road leading from his land over the downs to the Opihi river be formed and opened for traffic.

Resolved—" That the Overseer inspect the road and report, at, the next meeting of the Board and to write to Mr Jefcoate asking what ocher ratepayers are interested in the road.

From Messrs White and Smithaon, conveying their opinions as to the Board's power to contribute any ol their funds towards the destruction of the kea parrot. Mr Tripp explained at considerable length the action taken by the Geraldme County Council in referrnoe to levying a rate to defray their share of the cost of the Rangitata Bridge extension. After some discussion it was proposed and carried—(l)'That the Mount Peel Road Board having seen the proposal by Mr Clulee that £ISOO out of the rate of one farthing in the pound proposed to be levied by the G-eraldino County Council to pay the proportion due for the Rangitata Bridge i should be divided as a subsidy'between the ** Mount Cook, Levels arid Temiika ridings,, desire to protest against such proposal as most unjust 1o the Geraldine' and Mount Peel Ridings' (2) ' That the Mount Peel Road Board considers! that as in consequence of the separation of the Mount Cook Riding from' the Geraldine County, the Council now oonsists only ; p|>ix Members, r ' *'

it is expedient that the Geraldine an' Mount Peel Ridings should have two mem bars' each.' (8) 'That failing this being carried out, this Board considers, that it •Would be desirable that the Geraldine and Mount Peel hidings bo formed-into a separate county.' (4) ' That the'.Mount Peel Eoad Board will be willing to meet the Geraldine Board, or some members of-the same, to make arrangements for carrying out the above resolutions.' (5) ' That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the Geraldine County Council and to the Geraldine Eoad Board.' Mr J. Blair had an interview with the Board in reference to his [application for having the road near Pithie's shingled. Resolved—'That the Board decline to shingle the road in question, as there is at present a good metalled road leadingb'to the same point which is nearly half a mile shorter r than the one applied for.' . '. • Resolved—' That the Clerk write to the " Hon. the Minister for Lands, staling thatae ..the kea parrots are doing a considerable amount of, damage to sheep in this district, the Eoard would wish to. know whether any of the money voted during last session for the destruction of kea» will be available for this district.' Proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Mackay and carried—' That the cutting over Tripp's Pass be delayed till certain members, and the Overseer to the Board, have reported on it.' .. -.' Resolved—' That application be made to the Commissioner of Crown Lands to have all the reserves now fenced and planted vested in the Board.' The Clerk was directed to write to the Colonial Secretary, asking to be supplied with a copy of the Acts of last session. The Clerk submitted a letter received by him' from the Rate Collector for the Geraldine County Council, asking if he would act as eub'colledtor for the Mount Peel Riding, subject to. the consent of the Board being-ob-tained.
