NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRIES.

TO THE EDITOR Sib,- I am glad to see that local industry is making fair progress ai the , present lime in New Zealand. Kefrigerat- Jk iog companies are starting everywhere. The Timnni company has, I believe, been successfully limited, and a Committee appointed to select' a site for the same. The P.ireoni shareholders, it seems, will think it very unjust if the site should bo chosen at the Waehdyke. Now, what an idea some people must have got into thoir heads. There are other shareholders quite as much interested in the scheme as the Parecrians This and like industries are not got up for a few select persons, but for the many. The engineer made a very nice report on the Washdyke. Of course a man employed for a purpose must say something, and he did say 'something' that was most absurd as regards getting water. I am well acquainted with the vicinity of the Washdyke, : and I must certainly say .that water could be had in abundance for a much larger number of sheep than the company intend to kill daily. As regards a central position; I think it would be both fair and favorable for everyone. For instance, 'bow could the runhoMers around Peel Forest and Geraldiue send their sheep to the Pareora 1 It would be much more convenient to send them to Christchurch, and I am certain they would send them to Christchurch. The demand for frozen meat in the Home Markets is so high that it is v_ very encouraging to New Zealand farmers T" to raise more sheep than they have been doing of late years, Muttcn at the present time is at a very high price, and it would be very satisfactory to know that this source of Colonial industry could be carried on with the Home Country without interfering with the butcher's shop, —I am, etc.,
