A NEW ORDER OF INVINCIBLES.
Allsopp’s Waxworks Exhibition in Limestreet, Liverpool, was On the 16th of Jane the scene of a most extraordinary outrage,. Four young men entered the waxworks exhibition, arid went to the gallery of tragical curiosities. There was a group of figures representing the murderers in Phoenix Park. The group, as it stood; represented Mr Burke lying on the ground, and Kelly in the act of plunging a knife into his body. Lord Cavendish was depicted in a standing position, struggling with Fagan, and Brady stabbing him in the back. The figures of the other Mnvincibles ’ connecte I with the assassination were also among the .group. ( When the four men got in "this'apartment, the only other tenants, except a soldier and , a boy, were the waxwork figures standing in prim array for the inspection of the morbidminded. Whether they were mi drunk —or . whelher I hey acted under the influence of a deliberate plot to smash the Phoenix Park group—is best known to themselves. It. ;js, however, certain that thev at one commenced an attack on the group. TI ey leaped over the brass rails intended to'prevent the public from touching'the figures, and then set about in earnest to give an imitation of the Phoenix Park tragedy, i, The figures w&re torn' from their upright postures, dashed to the floor, and’ then jumped upon. The figure of Mr Burke with a long dagger stuck in , it, Was smashed about the face until It was qujte unrecognisable. That of Lord Frederick Cavendish was demolished in » like manner, and those of the murderers were also completely destroyed, Carey’s figure stood in a long criminal galley close to those of ‘ Skin the Goat ’ and ‘ Curley.’ His head was knocked off and thrown among the other mined group, and it was probably owing to the arrival of some of some of the establishment (hat it was not also stamped to pieces. The soldier apparently fled with .terror. The boy shouted for assistance! but by the time it arrived the woik of destruction, which only occupied a-few moments, had been completed. The first man to come, was Mr Haferkorn, who modelled the destroyed group of figures. On the staircase ho was seized by one .of the marauders —a man between twelve and thirteen stone in weight—and was roughly handled before his cries had ( attracted assistance. Mr Haferkorn states’ that he really believed before the police arrived that his' life was in deadly peril. When charged at the police station the prisoners gave r the names' Of Robert' Brownrigg, Joseph Hobden, and Henrv Lloyd. The two first, Were palpably tinder the influence of drink, hut’’ Lloyd was sober. The charge preferred against the three was one of ‘ wi’fnlly damaging'seven wax figures; represent mg the Phoenix Park tragedy, to the 'amount of £200.’ To the charge the prisoners replied, We don’t know anything about it.’ O the way to the police station one of them said, ‘I have knocked Carer’s head off; mm you can hang me if you please.’
