Professor Nordenksjold, the Swedish explorer in the Arctic regions, who re-: cently returned from an expedition to Greenland, reports the interior of that country consists of an ice desert of enormous extent, the existence of which was previously unknown, Sept. : 22. Sir Arthur Blyth, the Agent-General for South Australia, has invited tenders for his Government for a loan of £1,500,000, The minimum is fixed at 981 . ; A proclamation has been issued by the Irish Executive declaring certain parts of the counties of Mayo, Clare, and Limerick to be disturbed districts. The force of constabulary now stationed there is found to be insufficient to preserve order, and is to be strengthened.
The Daily News in its issue this morning publishes a telegram from its correspondent in Natal stating that a message was sent by the Governor of that colony to Cetewayo requiring his surrender, but it was not in the form of an ultimatum.
The St James’ Gazette, reviewing the plea of the colonists for annexation, condemns Lord Derby’s despatch in reply as offensive both in manner and matter. Both are unpleasing. It doubts very much whether the French will continue to respect the independence of the New Hebrides, and it says Loijd Derby shows no desire to help the Colonies to overcome the difficulties of their position, Vienna, Sept. 21,
The latest reports from Croatia state that the province is still in a disturbed state, A serious anti-Magyar disturbance has taken place at Cretz, a town near Agram. The steamship Roma, from London, via Batavia, brings later details regarding the Sunda disaster, they fully confirm the previous news, that the tidal wave was a hundred feet high, and that it swept several large vessels fully three miles inland, where they remained high and dry. The crews were all saved, The Roma found the sea all round Java covered with pumice, and her engines became chocked. All familiar landmarks had disappeared. The loss of life is set down at 75,000, but it is not possible to estimate the amount of damage to property. Adelaide, Sept. 21/ Reports are to hand that red rust has shown itself amongst the wheat crops of the northern districts of the colony. The statement is not, however, fully confirmed. Melbourne. Sept. 22. Fourteen bars of gold, which were stolen from the safe of the Commercial Bank of Australia, have been found on the Bank premises. The son of the caretaker is suspected of the robbery and has been arrested.
