ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Aug. 81. • Reports to hand from Java give the estimate of 30,000 as the number of lives lost by the tidal wave recently experienced off the coast of that island. The difficu’ty which had arisen beween Italy and Morocco has; now been settled, Sultan Mulni Hassan having sent ample apology to the Italian Government. The official inquiry into the circumstances* connected with the sinking of the steamer Austral in Port Jackson will commence on the 24th inst. Paris, Sept. 1. Telegrams have been received here reporting that the niece of the late Queen Ranovalomanjaka 11. has succeeded to the throne. Cairo, Sept. 1. It is estimated that since the outbreak of the cholera epidemic, 27,CC0 persons have died from the disease in this country. Bombay, Aug. 30. Owing to the distressed state of the population in Northern India, hundreds are being reduced to a condition of famine. Extensive relief works are being organised by Government. New York, Aug. 80. Melbourne, Aug. 30. 'I he Rev. Charles Strong has resigned the charge of the Scots’ Church. Sept. 1. Telegrams are to hand from Geraldton, on the West Australian coast, stating that a tidal wave was experienced there on Monday. The sea receded fully a hundred yards and enabled
