.The cargo of frozen meat, consisting of 5769 carcases, ex s.s. British Queen, from Lyttelton (left 31st May), has arrived in excellent condition. A portion was placed on the market to-day, and realised an average of sevenpence per lb. The Hon Mr Gladstone has announced his intention of making on Monday next, in the. House of Commons, a statement as to the course the Government would pursue regarding the agreement concluded with Count De Lesseps for a second Suez Canal • - The Union Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 9 per cent for the past halt-year, and carried £30,000 to the Reserve Fund. The National Bank of New Zealand has declared a dividend of 5 per cent for the past half-year. July 20. The sculling race between Hanlon and Ross took place over a four mile course at Odensburg, N.Y„ on the 18th, the stakes were for £2 aside. Hanlon won easily by twenty lengths. July 21, The following is an abstract of the despatch dated 11th inst., from Lord Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, to Sir Arthur Palmer, regarding the proposed annexation of New Guinea. The despatch deeply regrets that the/Queensland Government should have assumed powers which it did not possess, and remarks that the fears of annexation by foreign Powers are in definite and without foundation, adding moreover, that the capacity of the colony to govern- several millions of natives is Idbubtful. The despatch trusts that the federation of the Australian colonies will be speedily brought about, and promises that tha Imperial naval force in the Pacific shall be strengthened if Queensland contributes a reasonable gum towards defrayiug the additional expense incurred. In conclusion, the d a spatch promises that a deputy High Commissioner will be placed on the coast of New Guinea, thus securing a gradual protectorate over the Island.
The International Rifle contest between British and American t*ams concluded at Wimbledom to-daj, and was
won by the former. The New Zealand mutton ex British Queen has realised an average o.f 7d, and the Australian, ex Lusitania, 6£d to 6sd.
The Peruvian forces hare been defeated by the Chilians with the loss of 1000 men. The French are endeavoring to force & convention with the Siamese. Eight thousand telegraph operators have struck in America, affecting the communication with two hundred cities in the United States and Canada. Ihe Economist, discussing the question of Australian federation, expresses a fear that the financial and tariff differ ences present an almost insuperable obstacle. July 22. Cholera has appeared at Ismalia. The P. and O. boat Eohilla has not touched any of the Canal ports, and has proceeded direct. Berlin, July 19. A meeting has been arranged between the German Emperor William and the Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria, to take place at Gastein, in Upper Austria> on the 4th prox. Alexandria, July 19. The Khedive has accepted the proffered aid of England for the suppression of the cholera epidemic and Sir E. B. Malet has telegraphed, requesting that twelve doctors should forthwith ba despatched to Egypt. Cairo, July 21. The cholera epidemic still continues to spread at an alarming rate, and the mortality in the city has been fully doubled. At the instance of England, the system of cordons round infected localities has been - abandoned and
rigorous sanitary measures are now being carried oat instead.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, July 21, Intelligence has reached here from New Caledonia that the French Government recently granted to Adolphus Oppenheimer, of Auckland, the right aud monopoiy for ten years to dig for and export kauri gum from New Caledonia. During Oppenheiuitr's stay in New Caledonia lately, a French ship of war was placed at his disposal to explore parts of the colony. He discovered two extensive gumfields yielding excellent bard kauri, also rich chrome and cobalt mines, and obtained concessions for working the same.
