Business fair at 31 orders in both from town and country. Brought balance sheet to Treasurer as it was found correct. Land League meeting at Clondalkiu proclaimed, also Drogheda one. I hope th« people will not attempt to assemble at either for I think the Government want to rise the people into an insurrection, which every man of intelligence should know would be an abortive one and would put the hope of Ireland’s freedom for another generation out cf our reach, My Country the New year opens dark for thee still God is good and May, He, in his mercy avert any serious calamity from thee. 4th, Tuesday.— See D. C. D. V. Cottages at 8 oc. sharp. March.
17th, Thursday—St Patiok’s Day. Went to Mass 7. Oc. and received H C in his honer for obtaining the intention of Ire and. The Poor old land wants all the assistance she (an get, What with united En< mics and divided friends She is powerless hut God is good and to her He is with us who is against us We have not resisted 700 years to give it up now. ‘ There is hope iu Ireland whi'e in
Ireland (hero is life to lose.’ For time at last makes all things Even And if we do but watch the hour There never yet was human power That could evade if unforgiven The bitter hate and vigil long Of those who treasure up a wrong — Byron. Patron of Ireland Pray for Ireland. 18th, Friday.—Nothing strange to-day. brought B. S to J M to show to his friends 19th. Saturday,—A, M brought his friend B. seems a good fellow. E. McD.e did not keep his appointment, that is three friends ! who have failed in business this year. Trade very bad and no prospect of improvement. So far as I can see the agitation has destroyed business through Country farmers keeping their Money afraid they will be called upon to pay their rents. Land League dying a natural death, but not before it has obtained for as two good bills : Suspension of Raebus C. act & arras bill. So let us shout for Parnell & the League, bt, Joseph’s feast went to mass and received H. 0, in his honour & to obtain his protection during the year, St Joseph pray for Ireland. May, 2nd, Monday.—Went to St. Saviour’s received H. C. in honour of Mary to obtain her protection for Ireland and for myself. Comfortess of the afflicted pray for Ireland and me.
16th, Monday.—Business not a stir at 31. Thank God. I must turn over a new leaf as far as this diary is concerned. I do not give myself time to settle down anything regular. Ido not have time in the Evening so I must get up an hour Earlier say 5.30 & put down some of the incidents of the previous day. Wliat a romance could be written about my individual work alone at least that which I have knowledge of. Well if it fails it will not be our feult.
17th, Tuesday.-Saw 16, friend B. he seerna a fine intelligent young man & is quite satisfied to the special duty. Oh how different are our friends to the majority of their brothers, particularly in the unselfishness. While there are people like them there his hope ! It requires some little thing like what I saw to-day to kept us from desponding, God knows it is all up hill work, called everything that is bad by those who do not know us, or of those who do but have the courage of their convictions. But Bight will prevail please God. 18th, Wednesday.—o, My God how dark seems the future of Ireland, I mean the near future ; and consequently how oppressed and heavy I feel : 0 my Country I cannot do any more for you than lam trying to do. Would to God I was able at the sacrifice of my life, to give thee, Ireland one hour of freedom. 0, my God who watched over thy chosen people in their captivity & who blessed their struggles and rendered them triumphant over all iheir enemies, deign to bless our unfortunate country & teach its children to rely on themselves & not on their enemies for succour. May the blood of all their martyred children rise up before Thy throne for Mercy and Justice & teach their brothers to persevere in the true path. 19th,Thursday. —Did a good day’s work, Hope goods will be in this week. I must look better after Stock for I do not take as much interest in the business as deserves, for he is more like a brother than an employer. He does not seem to be rewarded much for his goodness, but I suppose it is the will of God that the just must meet troubles,! aye even more than the bad. Was speaking toJA CM. to-day. May God bless her what a sensible girl she is, and 1 am sorry to say there are not many such in this City. Which W. A. would say I left down to Ireland being a nation in slavery & i really think it is the primary cause of nearly all the Evils, both socially and political that afflict us.
20th, Friday.—Father Eugene Sheehy C.C., Kilmallock arrested with several ether local L.L., under the Coercion Act. I hope it may do good if it teaches the people they have the same Enemies to contend with as they had a century ago, & if it teaches them also to use the same means to obtain their rights which their forefathers used j the agitation will not be in vain ! God send it. June, 20th, Monday—The moving of our furniture this night was carried out most successfully thank God. Willfinish to-morrow eve. Commenced to take stock think I will finish the Hats on Wednesday & caps St sundries on Thursday. 21st, Tuesday.—With the assistance of God and the intercession of Mary, Joseph & St John, I have formed a resolution to take only two drinks of intoxicating liquors during the day. And I purpose to Enter every night before going to bed in this diary whether I kept my promise or not. May God give me strength to keep this resolution. Thinking of the danger I ran to-day must avoid it in future with God’s help. September, 9th, Friday.—The eve of our special undertaking. May God assist us and preserve us from our enemies. Perhaps this is the last time I will make an entry in this book. Well the will of God be done. lam prepared for either success or defeat. One has backed out, that leaves seven ; it is enough. If we succeed it will do more good than anything that has occurred this long time. 10th, Saturday.—ll.3o p.m. failed. Five turned up out of seven. Thank God I did not meet the two deserters to-night. Oh ! on whom Ckn you depend ; it is no wonder for earnest men to get cynical and lukewarm. Well, we have five at least on whom we can depend, and while there is one there is hope I am sleepy and mad. 20th, Monday.—Went last night to see Procession ! in honor of Parnell (The new Irish Tribune) clid not see any Procession Except, a most disreputable and undisciplined mob could be called one. The Freeman’s reporter rpust have worn Land League glasses and drank out of them previously for he states it was the finest seen since O’Connell, Ah the Goverlimeat is very foolish to bother itself
about them for they are harmless. Was introduced or rather introduced myself to two strange friends at Exchange Court & had a walk as far as the Castle yard to light our pipes &c. & went in to admire a sentry-box, strange visitors k strange business we were. Thank God the Procession ! was not a failure. October
3rd, Holiday,—Vigil of the Feast of the Seraph of Assisie, went to confession to Father Hickey. May God grant mo the graces necessary to spend to-morrow in a manner worthy of my Patron. All my work and trouble of last Sunday went for nothing when they were tried they were found wanting. But “ nil Desperandum ’ as the old saying, there are better fish in the sea than Ever were caught & if out of twenty you get one good one be satisfied, one in Earnest is better than one thousand half-hearted beings. And in spite of opposition from without and coldness from within (our cause is just) & we shall succeed.
