CEMETERY BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Cemetery Board was held in the Star Hotel, Temuka, on Tuesday last, Present—Messrs S. D. Barker, J. Blyth, J. Meyer, J. T. M. Hayhnrst, J. Brown, and J. Paterson. Mr Barker was voted to the chair. The minutes of the pre▼ious meeting were read and confirmed, after the Chairman had asked the opinion of the Board as to whether a resolution contained in the minutes could be rescinded if they were confirmed. The question of rescinding the resolution passed at the previous meeting re leasing a portion of the cemetery to Mr Hay hurst for seven years was discussed at considerable length. The Chairman stated that as one of the sub-Committee appointed to draw up an agreement between Mr Hayhurst and the Board, he had not moved in the matter, as he believed it best for the Board to have time to reconsider the subject. He had opposed the leasing of the land to Mr Hayhurst on the ground that if the Board wished to let the land for seven years, tenders should have been invited from the public, and not leased in the manner it had been. The public would then be satisfied that their interests had been considered in the affair. Messrs Blyth and Meyer were also of Mr Barker’s opinion, that public tenders should have been invited, and questioned the legality of the leasing to Mr Hayhurst, as that gentleman had voted, Mr Hayhurst said he had a right to vote, said if the land were taken from him he might have a say in the matter afterwards, Mr Brown considered that as the land was let for good value by nearly a full meeting, only one member being absent, the Board ought to be satisfied. The Board had power to let the land privately, and as a good rent had been obtained it was needless to waste money in advertising. Even if the resolution was rescinded, it would turn out the same, as it would again bo let by the casting vote of the regular Chairman (Mr Gray). He would like to know how the Board could help themselves if Mr Hayhurst had since tire letting erected a stable on the land. Mr Paterson thoughc that no good could be done by rescinding the resolution, as the land had been let, and the Board could not help themselves but must carry out the agreement. Mrßrownstated that noactioncould be taken at that meeting, as a notice of motion must be made. Mr Blyth then gave notice tha t he would at the next ordinary meeting of the Board move—- ‘ That the resolution passed at last meeting respecting the letting of the cemetery reserve to Mr Hayhurst for seven years be rescinded.’ Mr Blyth stated that, as requested by the Board, he had made an estimate of the cost of the necessary addito the Caretaker’s house. The Board decided that tenders should b« invited for the work. The meeting then adjourned.
