ESTIMATES FOR 1883-4.

Aiter dwelling for along time on several points of interest, the Treasurer said that he estimated for the next year customs at LI ,520,000; an increase of LB,OOO on stamps, L7OOO on telegraphs, and LIB,OOO on the property tax under the new valuation which would give a total revenue of L 3,573,800, to which, if the surplus of £35,549 were added, would give the total available revenue for the year L 3,609,394, As the estimated expenditure was L 3,661,496 there would be a deficit, which he proposed to make up by an increase of one farthing in the pound in the property tax. In conclusion he saw many signs of improvement, and suggested that they should persevere in a careful and methodical finance, and of the settlement of the land in such holdings as would promote its occupation by the people.
