The first portion of 352 quarters of beef, per Lady Jocelyn from Wellington, was placed on the market to-day, and realised 6d to per lb, The meat was in good condition. June 24. His Holiness protests strongly against the clerical policy now being pursued by the French Government. June 22. It is stated here that the Queen of Madagascar died six months' ago, and that the fact has hitherto taen kept secret. June 23. The trial of Louise Michel, the notorious Socialist, for sedition, was concluded to-day. The prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to six years' penal servitude. Berlin, June 23. A Bill lor the adjustment of the ecclesiastical conflict between the Prussian Government and the Vatican was voted by the Prussian Parliament to-day. Shanghai, June 23. It is reportad here that the negotiations which have been proceeding for some time past between Le Hung Chung, the Chinese Prime Minister and M. Tricon, the French Ambassador, have been brought to a satisfactory termination, and that an amicable settlement of the difficulty between China and France regarding their claims in Tonquin, has now been effected.
