X the Geuaxdine Guardian of the 19th from Mr Postlethwaits, wherein he accuses me of making two false statements in my lettor to the ratepayers on my retiring from the contest. Ist " That I asserted he received my letter to him announcing I was coming forward before he addressed ; the electors, ' whereas he can prove that it was not handed to him till after his return from Timaru on the following day.'" The fact is that I sent a person in my employ to Geraldine en the day of Mr Postlethwaite's meeting, who informed me that the letter was in the Post Office by 2 p.m. on that day. It is therefore most extraordinary that ilfchough Mr Postleth waite passed the Post Office on his way to the meeting he did not receive my letter " till his return from Timaru the following day." Mr Postlethwaite next says : " Km 1 to believe his assertion that he wishes to work in harmony with me." It is, I believe usual for one gentleman to believe a straightforward assertion made by another, Buch, for instance,'at I made i n my letter of June Ist, which was written by me in a most friendly spirit, and I can only say I am sorry that Mr Postlethwaite's temperament is such that he supposes that others must remember and keep up all quarrels and disagreements in public which have happened months or even years before between (hem, and be -unable to let bygones be bygones and try and work in harmony for the future. It was the tone of Mr Postlethwaite's speech at his meeting and tho advice which I received from another gentleman which induced me to retire His letter to me showed that I had done light, and as I said before I think you will agree with me. Mr Postlethwaite accuses me of perverting the truth in the matter of Mr White's legal opinion, and ho says that the never stated to the Board or at his annua,! meeting that he had got a legal opinion. What says the (tEr&ldine Guardian of May Bth? "The Chairman, Mr Postleth waite said he had obtained a say, he went to the same legal firm that the Mount Peel Board had qone to respecting the same question „ Mr Postlethwaite has never, as far as lam aware, corrected that report, and although it now suits his purpose to deny it I a n fully justified in believing that report to be correct, but 1 will leave Mr Postlethwaite to settle <hat with the reporter. - I am, etc., 1 C. G. TRIPP, Orari Gorge, 23rd June, 1883.
