ENGLISH MARKETS
London, May 26, Colonial breadstuff's and tallow ar e unchanged. Best Australian leather is at 9fd. At the wool sale to-day, 13,400 bales were catalogued, and there was a firm and active demand ; The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, report under date London, April 19th, as follows: Wool—Neither the general aspect nor the condition of the wool trade, as represented in this market, have altered in any appreciable degree since the close of the last auctions. All branches of manufacture are well engaged, and at the present rate of consumption there is fair ground to suppose that stock of the raw article will be materially reduced by the beginning of the series opening of the 16th proximo. Wheat—New Zealand—There is not much offering on the market, but fresb supplies of tbe old crop Lave come in —per Marlborough 2000 bags, Zealandia 2039 bags, Seatoller 1500 bags, and Woollahra, from Sydney, 9650 bags—and are now in course of landing. The demand is inactive, and we quote for fair to good quality of round berried at 44s 6d to 46s 6d, and long berried at 47s to 49s per 4961 b ex store. ; In cargoes, nothing doing, holders in Now Zealand wanting 46s 6d to 47s :per 4801 b c.i.f. terms, which is Is to 2s per qr more than our market will admit of. Australian —Supplies are very small, and there is a restricted sale on Ihe if pot at 49s to 51s per 4961 b ex store. Cargoes are held above buyers ideas. Flour—Dull. New Zealand worth nomiaaliy S2s to 345. Superfine Australian, 35s to 36s per 480 lb ex store. Barley—Malting and grinding qualities are rather easier to buy. Oats —The turn is in buyers’ favor.
Tallow.—Since the date of our last report the market has been very firm, with good demand for Australian, and prices for nearly all descriptions have advanced. We now quote good to fine mutton 45s to 46s 6d, and fair to fine beef 43s 6d to 44s 3d per cwt. which is is to 2s 6d higher for the former, and about 2s per cwt higher than on the 20th ultimo. Inferior sorts have been iu much demand at very lull prices.
Import from Ist inst. 2300 casks, and the stock in first hands amounts to about 4174 casks.
Hides, —At the auctions on the Ist inst. heavy Australian hides were alneglected, and nearly all were taken in; light ox and cows, however, were in request at extreme prices to occasionally advanced rates. We quote :—Heavy ox, 4|d to s£d per lb ; light, to 4§d; cows, to 4|d.
Leather.—This article was in somewhat improved request, but prices were generally Id per lb lower. We quote ; —Sides, first-class, prime tannages, 10id to lid per lb ; ordinary sorts, B|d to Basils. —We sold freely at an advance of about per lb. We quote ; —Australian, best strained, 14£d to 18d per lb ; second class, 13d to 15d; unstrained, to lid ; New Zealand, strained, 9|d to lOd.
