DUELLING IN GERMANY.
A. correspondent of a London paper, writing on the subject of the frequency of duels between college students in Germany, says that it is difficult to believe f>n what pretence a duel will sometim-s teke place, and relates at some length an incident which recently occurred in Ht i lelbcrg. An Englishman noticed at a tible d'hote how awkwardly a young German student tvas using his knife and said, ' You will cut your mouth open if } r ou d m't leave off eating graw with your knife.' The student, looked up, and answered 'What is that to you ? I can cut my mouth open to my ears, for all yon have a right to inteifere. 'Oh, nonsense.' said the Englishman coolly ; ' you can't expect a decent pel sen to let von hiiteher your self at dinner !' Oh. l.i.t I can, though, find you shall see ! Duinni'T Jnnge !' With thi't U e student rose and left the mom ' Dntnmer Jnnge !' ( stupid fel low) siyn'fies as much as a cliallence. The Englishman was terribly surprised at the scri"us consequences of what, he deemed a ni«>st natural remark, nffeied to apolouise, and did all in his power (r> have the matter arrange-', lint without effect. He intended Rung in the ni»■ if h • had the second shot lint chance wn« adverse to him. He h..d ihe ri«ht to shoot fir.-t—the aim was deadly mid Hie, young Tcutuii fell without a gruuii.
Next dav the Englishman traveled .« the town where bis victim's widowed mother lived, and'at the end of a two hours' conversatien he convinced her of his sincere regret and his wish to serve her. She admitted tliat her son hod not died through his .fault, bat through the mistaken notions of honor current among the youth of Germany.
