WINCHESTER FAIR,
The usual fortnight fair was held in the Winchester sale yards on Thursday last. The day was all that could be desired, but the attendance was small and but few of the lots offered changed hands. 2000 sheep, 170 head of cattle and 45 pigs were submittted, Subjoined are the prices : Fat sheep from 12s 9d to 15s; cross-bred lambs (culls), 7s ; cross-bred ewes at from 9s 6d to lis ; merino ewes, at from 2s 9d to 5s 6d,
Fat cattle at from L 5 10s to £7 ; three-year-old steers (stores), at from L 4 10s to £5 ; cows, springers, at from Lsto L 8 10s; calves, at from 21s to 275. Pigs at irom 5s to 355. AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS. TI3IAEU. Messrs Maclean and Stewart, of Tiraaru, report for the past week, ending Saturday as follows : Horses. —At their yards to-day a very full entry was received for sale, over 80 horses having been booked. The entries consisted of a large number of really first class draught horses, but they regret to have to report a very dull sale for these, and a very poor demand. Although the stock offered were first class a small proportion found buj'ers, only 22 having changed hands. To-day's sale was the dullest that ha 3 been held for months back, but now that the weather has apparently taken up they expect, as farming and contract work will be again resumed, the demand will increase and prices tor the right stamp ot draughts be satisfactory. Good mares and geldin»s to-day brought up to L 33 ; medium sorts, from L"2O to 1/21. For light harness nnd ordinary harness and ordinary hacks there is but little demand ; those were to-day quitted al fr nn h 8 to LI 6.
Sheep.—There is little doing in store sheep at present, and it is difficult p'acing these unless a reduction in former values be taken, although at the sams lime mutton is fetching full rates and prospects are good that tl.e demand will he a brisk on" dtirinir (lie winter months. been no transactions of importance during- the week, and prices are but little altered since they last reported. They sold a few small lines at Winchester last Thursday at last week's quotations. Fat cattle.—They have no transactions to report. Present values may be quoted at -about 21s per 1001 b. Country sabs. —On account of Messrs Kippenberger, Washdyke, they held a clearing sale of goodwill of lease, together with the whole of their dairy stock and plant. They have to report a fair competition for almost everything offered, and the stock and implements went all at full values. Dairy cows ! brought up to £ll 5s ; horses up to L 25 ; pigs from 10s to 255; implements and household furniture at fair values ; goodwill of lease and business bringing L6O. Wool, Skins, Tallow, etc—On Wednesday they held their usual fortnightly sale, and catalogued 1200 skins, 5 bales and 7 bags of casks of tallow. They report a very fair demand for all the lots submitted, and the total of their entry found buyers at the following prices : Full-woolled cross-breds, from 3s 6d to 4s iM ; : medium, 2s to 2s 6d ; good merinos, at from 3s to 4s ; ordinary, Is 9d to 2s 6d; pelts, from Id to 6d ; cross bred wool brought 7|d ; locks and pieces, from 2£d to 4d j tallow, from 2£d to 2£d per lb. AUCKLAND MARKETS. Since the 10th inst. it is estimated that 454 tons of potatoes have been landed here" from southern ports, and more consignments are coming. Ruling prices are L 4 10s to £5 per ton, AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, May 18. New Zealand oats are unchanged at 2s 9d. There is no New Zealand wheat in the market. Maiae has advanced to 3s per bushel. Adelaide, May 18. Wheat has declined 3d dming the week, and is now quoted at 5s 3d, market quiet. Town flour, per ton, £l2 5s ; country brands, £ll 10s. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, May 16. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report, under date London, 16th May : < The wool sales opened on the 16th inst. at the level of last sales. Coarse wools are easier; faulty scoured to fine scoured cross-bred are also easiei\ Wheat—Adelaide is worth 49s and New Zealand 45s per 496 ft). The weather is favorable for the crops here, and ieports are favorable concerning the growing crops in Russia, France, the Pacific States of America and the Eastern States of America. The Bank of England rate of discount is 4 per cent. May 18. - The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britian is 2,240,000 quarters, a decrease of 180,000 quarters as compared with last week. Adelaide wheat, ex store, remains at 50s. New Zealand do, 45s to 48s. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 345. Australian tallow has further declined Is per cwt, and best beef is now quoted at 41s, and best mutton at 435.
At the wool sales to-day, the bidding was steady, but the demand was not active. The catalogue comprised 11,300 bales. Later.
Owing to a heavy failure by a jobber on the Stock Exchange a semi-panic has been created, and the Home stocks are effected.
