AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS.
TIKABV. Messrs Maclean and Stewart, of Timaru, report for the past week ending Saturday at follows :—■ Horses—Again a very large entry of horses came forward to their yards for 6ale, over 96 head having passed under the hammer, and notwithstanding that a large portion of the horses submitted for sale were really first class sorts, the prices offered were considerably under their value. The demand was dull and sales difficult to effect. They have to report a considerable falling off in prices and horses of all kinds were to-day sold very much cheaper than they were three weeks ago. They sold about 30 at the following prices ;—From L2B to L 33 for first-class draughts ; fcr light and medium sorts, LlB to L 22 ; ordinary hacks and light harness horses bringing from L 8 to LI6.
Sheep— There i 6 an active demand at present for all kinds of store sheep, and prices realised at their different gales
were very satisfactory. At Winchester last Thursday a very large entry o f ehoep were received at the different yards and were all, or nearly all, sold. Good merino ewes are worth from 5s to 6b 3d ; merino wethers, 6s to 7s ; crossbred ewes, 10s to 12s; cross-bred lambs from 8a to 10s. At theße have quitted several lots. Rams—They have sold a uumber of Lincoln and Leicester rams during the week at irom LI to L 4 4a each,
Fat Sheep—These are felling at good valueß, from 14s to 16s for heavy weights, -■ . Cattle—The demand for store cattle is becoming ali more active, though they are still difficult to move off at their value, unless for well forward steers and heifers, which are at present mow saleable. They have no sales of importance to"report, a fair lot having been entered at Winchester sale and sold at about last week's quotations. Fat cattle ve also cheap, but likely to advance in price as soon as winter sets fairly in.
ENGLISH MARKHTS.
London, April 20. Colonial breadstuffs continue quiet at 50s for Adelaide wheat ex store, 44s to 48s for New Zealand wheat ex store, and 34s for Adelaide flour ex store. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,070,000 quarters. Australian tallow is firm at 44s for best beef, and 46s for best mutton. Best Australian leather is quoted at 10|d, a decline of April 23. . Adelaide wheat is unchanged at 50s ; New Zealand ditto has advanced Is per quarter, and is now worth 45s to 495. Adelaide flour has risen to 34s 6d,
ITJSTRALIAN MARKBTS.
Melbourne, April 24. The Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) reports of the local grain market as follows : Shipping wheat, 5s 3d to 5s 4d, market quiet ; malting barley, firrm at 5s 3d to 5s 9d ; New Zealand cats, steady at 2s lOd to 3s 2d for feeding qualities, and 8s 2d to 3s 4d for milling ; New Zealand oats under bond, quiet at 2s 3d to 2s ,7d.
