GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Geral dine Road Board was held on Tuesday, the l(>th inst. Present Messrs Postlethwaite (Chairman,) Deßenzy, Kellaml, Slack and Flatman.
interviews. Mr R. T. Button waited upon the Board to support a petition to have the l(ungita f a river-bed road re-formed and made narrower to force the traffic on to the gravelled road.
Resolved—‘ That the work be done as suggested by the Overseer.’
Mr Charles Boutclier was in attenridance to support a petition for a bridge over Russell’s creek ; also to know if the Board would improve the road between Clephane’s land and Townsend’s. It was resoUed that the lattei work be done, but with resp»rt to the bridge over Russell’s creek Mr .Slack propose I and it was seconded by Mr W, Deßenzy, pro forma —* That a bridge be built across Russell’s creek, and tenders be called by next meeting of this Road Board.’
The motion was lost, one member voting for it and four against.
TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted : No. 49, Connolly’s road—Thomas Gregon, £74. No. 50, Orari Gorge road—Maurice Lawler, £9 10s. No. 51, road near Grant’s—Michael O’Connor, £9 19s. No. 52, Timber on road in bush— W. Bowerrank, £ls. No. 53, Hnffoy’s road James Beckley, £8 15s. No. 54, Road in bush—A. McCool, £23. No. 55. Peckham’s road—Timothy Sugrue, £4B.
CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered : From Mr John Huffey, encloeing his account of loss sustained in contracts at Hilton and Speechly’s, in support of his claim for a refund of £6. Resolved—‘That the Board do not see any cause for reversing their first decision.’
From Mr George Barney and a number of ratepayers, petitioning the Board to force the traffic on to the centre of the road from the Rangitata tailway station to the Boundary road, opposite the Rangitata traffic bridge.
Mr Button interviewed the Board and suggested tha' a drain should bo made on one side of the road, and the large stones placed on the other side.
The, Board consented to tin the work as suggested, and nsdvel Mint notice should he given the Mount Peid Rc ad Board, under an existing agreement for maintenance of said road.
From Mr Uans Gripp, asking the Board to bear half the cost of fencing his laud in for about chains in length.
Resolved— ‘ That thn application cannot be granted.’ From the Rev George Barclay, suggesting to secure pieces of ground in various localities within the district for cemetery purposes, referring particularly to Rangitata, Woodbury and Kakaliu.
Resolved— ! That this Board beg to thank Mr Barclay for his suggestion, and that the Board will attend to tl • same, but wish to point out that the Rnng’tata is in the IWnha District and Peel Forest in the Mount Pi el Distriet.’ Mr John Kelland a«ked to have the drain lengthened by adding a few piped at the entrance of the Kakab" school grounds. The app’ication was granted.
Mr Junes waited upon the Board, asking to have a roa 1 made to bis house. Resolved—• That the Board cannot entertain the application, the work being so costly.’ The Overseer was ordered to report on the application of Messrs McMaster and Clark, a-king for a portion of the roal to be formed in Benutiiul Valley, Also to the letter oI Messrs Smith, Deimistonn and Co., stating that the hig stones thrown out by the workmen of the Board render the work of grubbing gorse alongside their fence, near Cooper’s creel, almost impossible, and requesting the Board to remove or break them on the gravelled portion of the road. A'so to the letter of Mr P. H. Wig'ey, calling the Boar i’s attention to the condition of the road from Beautiful Valley t - Sullivan's hut. From the Chief Surveyor, Christthe abolition ofa road through R.S. 19757. Messrs John Love and Richard Wells ask-d the Board to take and shingle the cuttings near places.
M. J. P Kalaugher asked the Board to allow him some compensation for work done on the road leading into the bush past Mr Williams’ bakery.
Resolved— ‘ That he bo allowed the sum of £lO. ’
OVERSEER'S REPORT. The <) verscer’s report was real and considered, and the following resolution* passed thereon : —(I) Mr Webb to be granted an extension of time owing to doing more urgent work for the Board. (2) To inflict penalty on Brosnahan —, and Nolan. (3) Work to be done at Peckham’s crossing. (4) Work suggested at Hilton crossing to be carried out. (5) Also at Pleasant Valley Point and at the Orari. (6) Opihi crossing at Collet’s road to be made good, (7) To advertise for willow stakes.’
UNPAID RATES. Proposed by Mr D • Renzy, seconded by Mr Platroan and carried— * That all defaulters of rates be summoned for next Court day.’
ELECTIONS. Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr DeR nzy and carried— ‘ That \fr Caleb K. Sherratf be appointed a< the Returning Officer of the Geraldine Road Board District under the Local Elections Act ot 1876/
Resolved—' That the general election of me i.bers to serve upon the under the new Road Board Act, 1882, be held on Tuesday, the Ist dav of May, 1883, and iliat there be three polling places—Geraldine, Woodbury and Hilton.’
SANITARY. The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was read and approved. SPECIAL MEETING. Resolved— ‘ That « special meeting of the Board he held on Wednesday, the 2nd of May, 1883.’ The meeting tln-n terminated.
