In the trial of Brady at Dublin today, the informers Carey and Farrell were cross-examined at length, but their previous evidence as to Brady’s guilt was in no way shaken. A photograph qf ‘No 1’ was identified in Court io-day by, Carey and Farrell, ! ”•
The six men Norman, 'Galiagbef l , Wilson, Dalton. Kirton, and who were recently arrested in London, were again brought up at the Bow street Police Court to-day charged with being in unlawful possession of explosives and conspiring to commit outrages. Mr Poland in his opening speech for the prosecution, showed that the pri-oners were connected with Whiteheads’ Factory recently seized at Birmingham, The case is still proceeding. In the Douse of Commons to-day Sir Henry James Attorney General, announced that the affirmations in lieu of Oaths Bill which was about to be tabled was only intended to apply to future members of the House and would not be retrospective.
A further portion of the Dunedin’s mutton has been sold at 6§d per lb. April 13. The trial of the prisoner Brady for the murder of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr Burke is still proceeding at Dublin. Evidence was given yesterday by independent witnesses fully confirming the statement of the informer Carey. Counsel for the defence is now endeavoring to piove an alibi on behalf of the prisoner. Later. Brady’s sweetheart has been examined and in her evidence she stated that the prisoner and she were walking together at the time when the murders were committed. Joseph Brady, the first of the prisoners charged with the murder of Lord F. Cavendish and Mr Burke, has been sentenced to death.
In the House of Commons to-day Mr Gladstone announced that Lord Wolseley and Lord Alcester (Admiral Seymour) will receive pensions of two thousand a year each for life. The trial of the dynamite conspirators at Bow street Police Court is still proceeding. Mr Poland, the prosecuting counsel, has further shown in his opening speech that Gallagher is the prime mover of the dynamite faction, and has for some time past been in correspondence with Devoy and Rossa and other leaders of the Irish revolutionary party in America,
April 13. At the Convention in America, a Fenian named Stephens predicted that Parnell would yet be compelled to appeal to the sword. Colonel Fred Burnaby is suffering fi*ora congestion of the lungs. Information from the Cape states that Herr Jorrisen’s mission to England is unofficial. One third of the Cuzco’s careo of frozen meat has arrived in a doubtful conditio i. The remainder is believed to be sound.
April 14. It is announced that the Qneeu will leave Windsor Castle for Osborne on Tuesday next. Owing to the recent activity of the Fenians in England, extreme precautions have been taken by the police to prevent any attack being made made upon Her Majesty. The trial of. Brad laugh for the issue of certain alleged blasphemous books was concluded to-day, and resulted in an acquittal. St, Petersburg, April 14.
It has transpired that a revival of activity in Nihilist circles has recently been manifested, and numerous arrests have been made by the police.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Launceston, April 14. Two youths named Ogden and Davis have been committed for trial for the willul murder of two men. The victims were line repairers and another man who was scalped, gave details of the crime, which was a terribly atrocious one. The affair has caused much excitement here.
