The Imperial revenue tor the financial year ended March 31st amounted to ■£80,000,000. Melbourne, April 4.
It is announced that the present session of Parliament will close at an early date. There will then be a few weeks recess, during which Government will mature measures for presentation to Parliament.
April 5.
Interim finance accounts have been issued by Mr Service as Colonial Treasurer. He estimates the revenue for the current year at £5,700,000 and tli3 expenditure, by votes, at £3,900,000, exclusive of additional Estimates to the amount of £431,000. This result will reduce Sir Bryan O’Loghlen’s eelimated balance to £37,000. The accounts show that £2,0u0,000 will be required to meet the deficiency tor railway expenditure in excess of the estimate. Mr Service in presenting the accounts to the Assembly last night, stated that the revenue is coming in satisfactorily. The last loan will realise £3,900,000, whereof £1,900,0u0 will be required for the reduction of other loans, but only £995,000 will be available for services this year. Nevertheless the obligations amounted to £1,550,000, of which amount one million was required for railways. Mr Service declared that the Treasurer’s accounts were in a singular state of confusion, and that the colony would experience great difficulty in paying its way, and that he is at his wits’ end to meet the engagements of the Treasury. One of the jurymen who was engaged in the trial of the murderers of the Joyce family at Matrasma, has arrived here and intends to settle. Brisbane, April 4. The revenue returns for the past quarter show that the receipts amount to £555,000, being an increase of £68,250 compared with last year, the Customs revenue during the quarter has increased by £31,000, and the income from railways by £32,000. The expenditure for the quarter amounted to £426,500, being an increase of £55,250 as compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The revenue for the nine months ended 31st March amounted to £1,710,000, being an increase ot £2200 as compared with last year.
