CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. March 15.
Wholesale produce prices:—Wheat 4s 2d to 4s 4£d ; choice Tuscan, 4s sd; oats, milling, 2s to 2s Id ; barley, 4s to 4s 9d ; flour, £lO 10s to £ll. There is no alteration in other prices. Messrs Robert Wilkin and Co, report ; —At the Addington Yards on Wednesday, 12,462 sheep, 497 head of cattle, and 261 pigs were yarded for the week’s supply. We sold crossbred wethers at 16s to' 16s 3d ; medium ditto, from 10s 9d to 12s ; fat lambs, from 7s 6d to 8s 6d ; a line two-tooth crossbred wethers at from 10s 7d to 11s ; crossbred breeding ewes at 9s 6d, a draft ot store lambs at 6s 9d. Fat steers at £6 each, three-year-old mixed stores at £4l7s 6d.
There was an average attendance of buyers at the weekly sale of sheepskins, which we held on Thursday, in our Now Zealand Wool Stores. Our catalogue comprised 2499 skins of various descriptions. Woolly skins, large, 4s 9d, 5s 4d, 5s lid ;do medium’ 2s 6d, 3s 3d, 4s, 4s 9d ; do small, Is sd, 2s, 2s 6d ; lambskins, large, Is lOd, 2s 2d, 2s 6d; do second quality, Is, Is sd, Is 10d; pelts, large and early shorn, Is lOd, 2s 3d, 2s 6d ; do medium, lid, Is sd, Is lOd ; do small and late shorn, 3d, 6d lid. Fat and tallow—The trade was well represented, and there was a good demand. Fifty-eight packages Wgro~cKTai O nr Uei [ Fat—Bestq'ialify, clean and well saved, to per IK; second quality, to per lb. Hides and calfskins not sold. Wool—There h&s been none disposed of since our last report, but we will offer a few lots at our sheepskin sale next Thursday.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report under date Melbourne, 7th March, 1883, as follows : SHEEPSKINS. A large number have arrived daring the week, and some very satisfactory sales have been made. The demand for butchers’ pelts continues good, and at quotations, below a large number have been placed :—Lamb skins, up to Is 9d each ; butchers’ pelts up to 3s ; lambs’ pelts, up to 9d ; dry skins, 3s to 6s ; station skins (in bales), 4id to 7d per lb. LEATHER. Inquiries still reach us for calf, waxed kangaroo, and stout black harness,
which are very scarce. In all descriptions a large and satisfactory business has been done, and the market for the week being brisk and active : Green ox hides, 16s to 30? each ; green cow hides, up to s£d per lb ; calf-skins. 3d to 4d ; New Zealand hides, up to 4|d ; kip hides, up to salted hides, to 4d ; do, extra heavy up to 4^d. GRAIN. Wheat—There has been an indisposition shown to operate throughout the week, except at such prices as holders were unwilling to accept, hence the amount of business done has been small. In consequence of the dullness in the market, we withdrew all the wheat from our catalogue this morning. Market closes with limited sales at 5s 4|d, holders asking 5s 6d. Flour—A fair demand experienced? and some good parcels have been sold for export. Shipments to Sydney are well sustained. Sales made for picked brands at £ll 10s ; ordinary, £11.2s 6d to £ll ss. Town makes are still quoted at £l2 for trade lots.
Oats.—A rather uneven market, but the continuation of dry weather has prevented anything like a heavy drop in prices being sustained. It must not be forgotten that with the first rains followed by a spring of autumn grass, consumption will slacken, and hence prices will ease. The price# now current are 2s lOd to 2fc lid for inferior light feed, of which the supply is large ; 3s- to 3s Id for good Tartarian ; 3s 2d to 3s for stout and heavy Jots.
Barley—The malsters have been holding off the market ol late, or only purchasing in small parcels when concessions are made ; 5s 6£d to 5s 7d is about the price of choice lots of Chevalier ; 5s 3d to 5 s 4d for medium 3s lldto 4s for Cape. For crushing samples ot English, the range of values is wide, depending upon quality.
Maize.—There is a disposition towards easier prices, and sales have been made from Bs 9d to 4s, according to sample, 4s 3d paid for prime Victorian ninety-day. Peas.—A slightly better market. The closing prices obtained at‘3s 4d to 4s 5d for best samples. Bran.—Easier rates accepted this week ; Is 2d is the closing price.
Pollard,—A concession on Is 2d accepted for a parcel.
