DEBATING SOCIETY.
jPI, to the editor. Sir, —As winter approaches and Ihe long evenings draw nigh, might I suggest through the columns ot the Leader the advisability of inaugurating a Debating Club in Temuka. I need hardly suggesthe advantages arising from such an institution, but I am sure you will ograe with mo, that, in a young country such as New Zealand is, with its lack of facilities for impi oving the mind and the temptations that unfortunately beset our youth, anything that can in a measure lessen those temptations, and improve us morally and socially is worthy, and deserves, the support of the general public. Such a society formerly existed here, and, speaking for myself, the meetings were really enjoyable, and much appreciated, but the uosuitabilitj of the hall—from its not *' being central enough—was really the cause of its collapse. Now, sir, as a matter of this kind comes fully within the scope of our Mechanics’ Institute, I would suggest to the Committee the necessity of at once calling a meeting and getting all the information possible with a view of bringing it to a successful issue, as such a course would be he the means, not only enhancing its funds, but of raising the status of the Institute.—l am, etc. J.H.
