The chief officer of the Eastern and Australian Company’s steamer Menmuir, has been found to be suffering from smallpox, and the vessel has been quarantined • Seven fresh cases of smallpox have occurred on board the steamship Menmuir. All the sufferers are passengers, six being Chinamen, and the seventh, a salami passenger, is a European. The patients have all been removed to the Coast Hospital at Little Bay quarantine station. There are several other suspected cases of smallpox on hoard the Mcnrauir. Later. Owing to a squabble in the Legislative Assembly between Mr John Mclihone, the member for the Upper llenter, and Mr H. Taylor, representative for Mudgce, both gentlemen hav e resigned their scats in the House, and both have announced their determination of contesting the election for the vacant constituency of Mudgee.
