The steamship Cimbria was bound from Hamburg to New York. There were 490 souls on board when she sailed, and up to the present only 56 have been saved. The worst is feared as to the fate of the remainder, Jan. 22,
The latest intelligence from Hamburg reports that only 67 of the Cimbria’s passengers have as yet reached land. No further information has been obtained regarding the remaining 423 persons who were on board at the time the vessel sau' r .
Recent telegrams from Cannes state that Mr Gladstone’s health has benefited by his visit to the south of France and continues to improve.
ft is reported that the Prince of Wales will visit Canada in March.
In a case which is now proceeding at the Dublin Police Court, startling disclosures have been made by informers regarding the history and movements of what is known as the ‘ Inner Circle of Assassins ’in Dublin. Evidence has also been given of the fact that at uifferent times three attempts were made by members of the organisation to assassinate Mr W. E, F( rster when he was Chief Secretary for Ireland. The French Government has addressed a communication to the Powers on the subject of the circular of the English Government, explaining its intentions in regard to Egypt. The French Government protests against the proposals of England, hut the protest is couched in moderate terms, New York, Jan. 21,
Intelligence is to hand of a serious railway accident having occurred on the overland line between San Francisco and Omaha. A train bound for the former place slipped while ascending a steep gradient and rolled over the embankment, The engine and all the carnages were shattered to pieces, So far as is at present known, twenty passengers have been killed, and a number of others are severely injured. Berlin, Jan. 21.
The death is announced to-day of Prince Frederick Charles, brother ot the Emperor William. He was born in 1801.
