TIMARU MARKET*

Messrs Maclean and Stewart on Saturday last reported for the past week as follows :

Horses—A smaller entry than usual was received at their yards to-day for sale, owing in a great measure to the large amount of harvest work now going on, and farmers and others being too busy to send their horses in for sale. They do not anticipate any great demand for a few weeks to come, and although horses of the right stamp brought good prices to-day, they cannot expect, except in some few cases, much increase in present prices dudng the nex* few Saturdays. They yarded to-day 45 draught and light horses and sold fully half that number at the following prices, viz. for heavy draughts from £2B to £33; light harness, from £l7 to £2l ; ordinary hacks £lO to £l6.

Cattle—l hey have little fo report on store cattle at present, their usual buyers are too busy either to send stock for sale or to attend sales themselves, conse quently it is difficut to quit unless at low rates. At Washdyke last Monday they yarded fully 150 head, but nearly onehalf of these were turned out unsold. Tliey sold about 50 head at for 2-years-old steers and heifers, £2 7s 6d ; 3 yearold steers at £5 ; and cows from £B to£6. At Winchester on Thursday last they yarded about 40 head, all of which found buyers, steers at £5 7s 61; cows from £4 to £6. Fat catde— They have no sales to report of any importance, present rates are about 20s per 1001 b.

Sheep—The demand for store sheep is somewhat b r, ttei' than when they last re ported, but owners are holding out for higher values. At Washdyke last Monday they sold 115 lambs at 5s 6d, 156 lambs at 6-61, ami 145 merino wethers at 4s Id. At Winchester last Thursday they sold privately 200 cross-breds ewes, 150 merino ewes and wethers at satisfacprices. Fat sheep are worth l|d to 2d per lb.
